Many projects and initiatives worldwide are aiming for the reduction of food loss. Companies, governments or NGOs involved may find inspiration in similar existing initiatives and experiences elsewhere in the world. The brochure “Tackling food loss – Drivers for change” presents the results of an inventory study on how agro-food chains can be optimized or better organized to prevent food losses.

Six drivers for change have been drawn from an analysis of fourteen projects worldwide, which are aiming to reduce food loss in agricultural value chains in developing countries:

  1. All chain actors have an incentive to contribute
  2. Government creates an enabling environment
  3. The private sector is involved
  4. A champion is personally involved
  5. Local context is taken into account
  6. New technology is available

The Food & Business Knowledge Platform funded the study, which was conducted by Wageningen Food & Biobased Research. The output is meant to inspire stakeholders in future initiatives aimed at reducing food losses in agri-food chains to understand the relevant drivers for change at the start of the project or initiative. The Postharvest Network will be using the drivers for change during the setup and execution of new projects. In doing so they expect to decrease food wastage in any project initiated by the Postharvest Network.
