In the final round of the CGIAR Senior Expert Programme (SEP), two Senior Experts receive extra funding to spend more time on their CGIAR research and research management in large CGIAR programmes and platforms. In total 17 Senior Experts have been awarded funding in the four assessment rounds of this instrument.

The Senior Expert Programme (SEP) is one of the three instruments in the Netherlands (NL) – CGIAR research programme. The CGIAR, a global research partnership, collaborates with the Netherlands on food security, dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security, and improving natural resources. The aim of this specific instrument is to support the participation of Dutch research organizations in CGIAR. This is realized through partial funding of the personnel costs of Senior Experts who are employed at a Dutch research organisation and participate within a CGIAR Research Program (CRP) or Platform. Their work should be linked to one or more of the four priority knowledge domains of the thematic strategic partnership:

  • Agriculture for nutrition and health
  • Sustainable agri-food value chains & sectors
  • Genetic improvement and propagation materials
  • Climate smart agriculture

These knowledge domains are based on the congruency between the goals of the Netherlands and CGIAR, as well as the areas of excellence of Dutch International Agriculture Research (IAR).

The two last Senior Experts which have been awarded funding in the Senior Expert Programme are:

Dr. ir. G. Sterk

Prof. dr. ir. M.K. van Ittersum

The Netherlands – CGIAR Strategic Partnership

The Netherlands – CGIAR research programme enhances international agricultural research in view of contributing to transformational change in agriculture around the world by advancing food system knowledge and joint public and private innovation. It is aimed at facilitating successful partnering between CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs), CGIAR platforms, and CGIAR Centers and Dutch research organizations and stakeholders from the public and private sector, both for-profit and not-for-profit.

This call for Senior Expert Programme (SEP) candidates is implemented in close collaboration with the CGIAR and with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MinFA) and of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (MinAgri), as well as the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP). The SEP call and other instruments of the NL-CGIAR research programme are funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented through NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development.
