A global analysis of land take in cropland areas and production displacement from urbanization

This article analyses urban land take in cropland areas for the years 2000 and 2040, using a land systems approach. The results show that future urban expansion is primarily expected in areas that are also suitable and available for cropland, thus suggesting a continued competition for land between urban expansion and food production. »

Analyzing drought adaptation practices of sugarcane growers in Thanh Cong, Thach Thanh District, Thanh Hoa, Vietnam

This article analyses drought adaptation practices of two groups of sugarcane growers – market and contractual farmers – in Vietnam. Results of this study point out that farmers, depending on their preferred type of market channels, reacted differently to the impacts of drought. Contractual farmers paid more attention to the impact on sugarcane tillering and sugar content, while market-oriented farmers paid more attention to sugarcane colour. »

Monitoring rice agriculture across Myanmar using satellite data

This article in the Remote Sensing Journal highlights new opportunities for monitoring agriculture. Assessment and monitoring of rice agriculture over large areas has been limited by cloud cover, optical sensor spatial and temporal resolutions, and lack of systematic or open access radar. The use of dense time series of open access Sentinel-1 C-band data at moderate spatial resolution offers innovative opportunities for assessment and monitoring of agriculture. »

Measuring food waste in a dairy supply chain in Pakistan

This article provides a first attempt to test the methodological principles of the Food Waste Protocol, using the Pakistani dairy supply chain as a case study. A FLW Standard and protocol have been developed by UNEP and WRI and NestlĂ© actively contributes to the development and conducted a pilot project on food waste using its Pakistani dairy value chain in 2014. »
