The Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP) and NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development are organizing a short seminar on Thursday afternoon January 17, 2019 in the Mensvic Grand Hotel in East Legon Accra, Ghana. Theme of the session will be future food systems for Ghanaian food security. The session is aimed at experts working to improve Food and Nutrition Security in Ghana and the members of the Dutch international multi-stakeholder research consortia of the Global Challenges Programme (GCP) Call 3 that focus on food systems and will be present in Ghana for their midterm sessions.

The seminar will be centred around the question how Ghanaian consumers can access sufficient various quality food that is in accordance with their dietary wishes and health needs, and the drivers of change (type of policy, agriculture, inclusive trade etc.) needed to achieve this sustainably.

Based on their research findings, one of the GCP-3 researchers will give a general presentation on theoretical insights and deriving questions, on tensions and implications of various food system choices. Hereafter, the University of Ghana will introduce the theme of Ghanaian food systems and their components, the status quo, actual and foreseen policy, and desired (transitional) pathways. This will be followed by a panel discussion with representatives from Ghanaian business, civil society and government on practical examples and directions for Ghana food systems transitions to deal with improving Ghanaian quality sustainable inclusive food consumption.

Hereafter participants will discuss in groups on possible directions for solutions by exchanging on various food system components, such as local/regional/global trade, innovation, marketing, land rights, population, transport, values, -informal- markets, wages, agriculture, FDI, seasonality, consumer demands, food safety, and ecological food print.

The afternoon will be concluded with ideas on which food systems are preferred and how to improve policy support for good practices and joint strategies for future proof Ghanaian transitional food system approaches.

Announcement winner Agrofood Broker of the Year 2018 Award

The seminar has been selected as the moment to announce the winner of the Agrofood Broker of the Year 2018 Award. This is a yearly prize of the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP) to award a professional in the field of Food and Nutrition Security (FNS), who has undertaken significant brokering activities.
