During the 5th Global Science Conference on Climate Smart Agriculture 2019, NWO-WOTRO, CCAFS and IFAD organize a side-event on business model inspiration and ideation for scaling CSA, which is linked with the GCP-4 and CCAFS projects focusing on scaling up CSA. The side-event takes place in the VIP room of the conference venue on October 10, 2019, from 14:00 till 15:30.

There is great interest in scaling up Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), but there is a lack of successful and proven models for scaling CSA. One reason is the focus of CSA has been on developing and testing innovative CSA technologies, policies, and stakeholder processes, but less focus on designing innovative business models for scaling CSA.

About the Session

This side-event session “Business model inspiration and ideation for scaling CSA” aims to develop CSA business model concepts which could be prototyped and tested for feasibility and deployment. The session will be a highly interactive ideation workshop to co-design potential business models for scaling CSA. Using Human-Centered Design principles of inspiration and ideation, this workshop will bring together enthusiastic and innovative design teams to propose business models for scaling CSA around a set of different themes:

  1. Climate-smart seed systems;
  2. Climate information, agro-advisories, and extension;
  3. Climate-smart financial services;
  4. Climate-smart value chains.

The proposed agenda is as follows:

14:00 – 14:15 Overview of session and summary of business model themes.
14:15 – 15:00 Teams ideate on how business models can be improved for the themes of focus.
15:00 – 15:30 Business models are presented to panel who provides feedback and votes on the model with highest potential for taking forward to testing at scale.

The session is co-organized by NWO-WOTRO, CCAFS and IFAD, and is linked with the projects of the fourth Global Challenges Programme call (GCP-4 and CCAFS projects), which focus on scaling up CSA.
