The session (by invitation only) will focus on climate change and investments in the drylands of Eastern Africa. The topic will be introduced by Ms. Camila Toulmin (IIED) who is a British economist, former director of IIED and further expert on the drylands of Africa. Her work combines field research, policy analysis and advocacy.

The session is organized on the occasion of the 6th annual meeting of CELEP (26 and 27 November at Cordaid). The opening session aims:

(i) to discuss the challenges and opportunities for pastoralism in the Horn of Africa;

(ii) to provide a dialogue platform that feeds into the policy debate and;

(iii) to provide information on the main policy frameworks supporting pastoralism and the good practices and experiences from the field.

CELEP is the Coalition of European Lobbies on Eastern African Pastoralism. The focus is on the recognition of pastoralism as a valuable and viable livelihood system that contributes to the national and regional economies, food security, employment and the sustainable management of natural resources. CELEP was founded by Cordaid in 2009, AgriProFocus joined in 2012. Today, CELEP is an advocacy coalition of international NGO’s, research institutes, groups and experts working in partnership with pastoralist organizations, groups and experts in Eastern Africa.
