The World Bank Group’s Agriculture Global Practice WBG-Netherlands Partnership “Food for All” is organizing a series of Food for All Talks. The first Talk focuses on “From Production System to Food System for Healthy Diets and Nutrition: What does it take?”. The event takes place on Thursday, February 9, 2017 (8:30 – 9:30 AM EST in WBG MC 6-860 || 2:30 – 3:30 pm CET in Netherlands) and can also be attended globally through WebEx (see details below).

Context

With economic development, a greater proportion of value in the food system moves from primary agriculture to food processing, handling and retail. This transformation of food systems varies by country and thus considering national and sub-national food systems is important. The benefits of food system transformations are not always distributed equally and are also strongly associated with an unhealthy dietary transition. Low quality diets underpin all forms of malnutrition. Food systems are multidimensional, with multiple actors, managing multiple linked and nested agri-food value chains within dynamic and interactive food environments. Our food system research focuses on opportunities for healthy food system transformation in focus countries (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Vietnam) at different stages of economic development. There are important challenges in moving to a food system approach. How do we assess the key drivers of complex food systems to identify feasible actions to influence key drivers? How can we influence stakeholders in commodity-specific value chains to consider diet diversity and quality? How do we monitor, evaluate and learn to accelerate progress?
