This book strengthens the evidence base for, and expands our vision of, how agriculture can contribute to nutrition. In order to achieve truly nutrition-driven agricultural policies, programs, investments, and strategies, nutrition needs to explicitly be integrated into the design. The most salient theme of this volume is the need for more evidence. More research is needed on the sustainability of agriculture–nutrition interventions. »

This paper assesses the contribution of livestock to the food and nutrient supply of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by presenting a case study of eight countries. For almost all the countries and under a range of scenarios of economic and climatic change in 2050, it is found that per capita protein supply from livestock-derived food (LDF) will increase relative to that from plant sources. »

This policy brief focusses on policy development to guarantee food security for urban families. The countryside is not the same as the city, yet too often policy confuses the two. To identify what policy strategies would be most effective, stakeholders should conduct surveys at the household level that involve inquiries on education, food affordability and household size. »

This paper synthesizes qualitative research conducted conjointly with quantitative surveys, to develop a project-level Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (pro-WEAI). Economic status was an important component, meaning that empowered women can take care of themselves, their families, and their communities.
