This paper by Eugenie Maïga, Luc Christiaensen, and Amparo Palacios-Lopez, investigates the extent of youth engagement in agriculture in six African countries using unique data from the Living Standards Measurement Surveys-Integrated surveys on agriculture (LSMSISA). They employ both descriptive and regression analysis to compare the hours worked per week in agriculture by the youth (16-35) and the prime-age group (36-60). »

Review of community seed production practices in Africa

This review consists of two parts. Part one takes a closer look at implementation strategies and models of community seed production practices, while part two focuses on lessons learned and future perspectives. The study covers five case studies in Africa and is based on an analysis of different published and unpublished sources on seed production and seed delivery with a focus on farmer seed management and commercial seed. The review was also informed by interviews with seed system practitioners. »

Seed System Security Assessment in West Nile Sub region

How does the fruit and vegetable sector contribute to food and nutrition security?

This explorative study looked at the potential of the fruit & vegetable sector for Food and Nutrition Security (FNS). The methodology consisted of a focused literature review mainly concentrated on the following countries: Ethiopia, Rwanda, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Indonesia and Vietnam; and semi-structured interviews amongst different growers, traders and workers in the Ethiopian fruit and vegetable sector. The development of the fruits & vegetables sector in developing countries has a positive impact on the FNS of the people engaged in the sector and for urban and rural consumers. »

New biogas plant improves waste management in Kampala pig abattoir

Projects led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and partners are improving waste management at Wambizzi, the only pig abattoir in Uganda, as part of wider efforts to improve pig production and pork marketing in the country. A new biogas plant, funded by ‘More Pork For and By the Poor’, transforms waste from the pig slaughterhouse into methane gas. »
