AgriProFocus Kenya is organizing an online Food and Nutrition Security webinar on May 12, 2020 at 09:00 (Netherlands time) focusing on the theme “Food Safety and the role of Traceability in light of COVID-19”.

COVID -19 is currently ravaging countries globally and it has affected all sectors of the economy including Agriculture however, there is a need to continue with the campaign for a better food safety control system in Kenya. Currently food systems in the region are being severely affected by COVID-19. In Kenya, we have already seen ramifications across agricultural supply chains, from production to last-mile distribution and this has further highlighted the gaps we have in our food systems. The unprecedented challenge of COVID-19 implies the need to both address the current crisis and take stock of the sustainability of the food system. To attempt to put that into perspective, AgriProFocus, the Society of Crop Agribusiness Advisers of Kenya (SOCCA) and Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) will host a webinar aimed at sharing experiences and responses to the impact of COVID-19 on food systems in Kenya, specifically at the county level.

The webinar also seeks to shed light on the gaps that have been characteristic of the Kenyan Food System especially on Traceability and how this is key to address to ensure Food Safety is maintained especially during a period where the existing food systems is strained.

Below are some of the key issues the webinar will address:

  • What are the major gaps in the Kenyan Food Safety System?
  • How does traceability affect food safety and trade of horticultural produce locally?
  • What has been the impact in the production, affordability, access, supply chain (upstream & downstream) & last-mile distribution on small scale farmers?
  • What are some of the proposed and active solutions that we can scale to enhance food safety and distribution ?
