The symposium “Knowing food crises” is organized in the context of 100 years WUR and takes place on March 20, 2018 at 14:00 in the Wisdom and Wonder Pavilion at Wageningen Campus. 

Judging the severity of a food crisis from a distance is difficult, especially in regions that are in conflict. For an international humanitarian response it is key to safeguard interventions from unintentional effects to prevent harmful outcomes. This is far from easy as history shows. Yet, ignoring the plight of the hungry is no option, and local and international responses to food crisis in one way or another have to deal with uncertainty about the severity, scope, and local power dynamics of acute hunger, and base their interventions on data that that is considered trustworthy, reliable or simply available. Furthermore: a well-informed public is essential to support strong humanitarian responses.
