“Space for Food Security” is a side event of the European Space Solutions 2016 conference which will take place in The Hague from May 30 till June 3. 

Under the auspices of the 2016 Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU, the fourth edition of European Space Solutions is coming to The Hague. Taking place at the World Forum Convention Centre from 30 May to June 3, 2016, the major 5-day conference will bring together business and the public sector with users and developers of space-based solutions. Registration is free-of-charge but mandatory.

Space for Food Security

On June 2, the side event “Space for Food Security” will challenge the participants during a journey across the global food security agenda. Presentations will be provided on food security, the associated stakeholder and their information needs, a picture of satellite technology and services up to and including business driven approaches (G4AW Facility) and implementations. A special focus will be provided on license to oprate, role of aggregators, bridging the last mile and operational and scaling aspects of the services. The event will be closed with a panel discussion and discussion with the audience.

During the event, participants will learn how:

  • space applications can contribute to increasing food security.
  • to provide added value to millions (smallholder) farmers using satellite data.
  • to set up businesses which are affordable and still profitable.
  • cases: rice farming (Mekong), insurance services (Africa), disease prevention (India), irrigation services (Southern Africa).

Who should attend?

The target audience of this session include (potential) end-users of smart information solutions, all organizations within the information chain that are working on developing information services and products, investors, ngo’s, policy makers and everyone else who is interested in the services for food security.

Programme

14:00 Opening and objectives of the side event
The workshop will be opened by the moderator and a key note speaker who will frame the objectives of the workshop. The public will be asked to react on several theorems.
14:15 Challenges in feeding 9 billion people and the need for better data
The first speaker will present from a policy perspective the challenge of feeding 9 billion people in 2050, and the need to for innovative solutions developed and operated by private public partnerships.
The sector speaker is from the perspective of innovation: what can be achieved if we combine the various available (geospatial) datasets.
14:30 Sustainable services for food security
Four services for food security will be presented which are being implemented in various regions in the world. Each services will be described from a business vision, the targeted market (clients) and added value for the customer (“the business model”). Attention will be given to critical success factors such as reliability, scalability, license to operate and financing (investments, revenues). Presented challenges and dilemmas will be subject for discussion with the audience. The four services (TBD) are:

  • Advisory services for sustainable rice farming in Mekong Delta
  • Agricultural insurance services in West Africa
  • Crop disease prevention in India
  • Irrigation services in South Africa and Mozambique

16:15 Scaling up: from research to financial sustainability
In this interactive section the public, presenters and a panel will reflect on the various paths that lead to financial sustainable service provision. The discussion will be fed by the public reaction on theorems, the expert opinions provided by the panel and lessons learned from G4AW Facility programme. The panel is composed of representatives of science, industry, service providers, financing sector and government.

Last speaker will reflect on the outcome of the workshop. You will not leave this workshop with a few important messages.
