The Gorakhpur Environment Action Group (GEAG) organizes the National Conference on “Peri-Urban Agriculture and Ecosystems: The Multi- Faceted Contribution to Urban Resilience (Peri-Urban 2016)” in February in New Delhi.

 GEAG is organizing this Conference in collaboration with National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Government of India and RUAF Foundation, the Netherlands, and with support of The Rockefeller Foundation. The other strategic partners in the conference are ISET-International, CANSA and India Water Portal.

The interactive conference will be divided into various thematic sessions leading to concluding sessions where the needed action at national, state and local levels will be identified. The participants will include scientists and academics, researchers, development professionals, planners, elected representatives, government departments and peri-urban farmers.

Focus and purpose

The conference will focus on issues relating the urban and peri-urban areas – influenced by the growth of urban areas placing this in the context of rural-urban linkages. The purpose of this conference will be to capture local, state and national attention and bring together national, metropolitan and regional perspectives on this increasingly important research, policy and practice agenda and provide concrete practice and policy examples to participants.

The four overarching themes that will guide each session of the conference are:

  • Conceptualization and Methodology of Peri-urban researches;
  • Peri-Urban Ecosystem;
  • Choices in Peri-Urban;
  • Urban food, nutritional and livelihood security.
