The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) is the United Nations’ forum for reviewing and following up on policies concerning world food security. It also examines issues which affect the world food situation. The CFS annual plenary session 46 will take place in Rome from October 14 till 18, 2019 and focuses on “Accelerating progress on SDG2 to achieve all the SDGs”.

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) is the foremost inclusive international and intergovernmental platform for all stakeholders to work together to ensure food security and nutrition for all. The CFS Plenary session is held annually and is the central body for decision-taking, debate, coordination, lesson-learning and convergence by all stakeholders at a global level on food security issues.

Using a multi-stakeholder, inclusive approach, CFS develops and endorses policy recommendations and guidance on a wide range of food security and nutrition topics.  These are developed starting from scientific and evidence-based reports produced by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) and/or through work supported technically by The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), World Food Programme (WFP) and representatives of the CFS Advisory Group. CFS holds an annual Plenary session every October in FAO, Rome.

Side Event “Business and Nutrition Success”

During the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 46) in Rome, a multi-agency team organizes the side event “Business and Nutrition Success: contributing to nutrition outcomes through smart investments in farms and agribusinesses” on Monday, October 14, 2019 from  18:00 till 19:30 at FAO HQ, Rome, Italy. Please note that the event will be anticipated by light refreshments served close to the Iraq room at 17:30.

The team will be presenting the case for nutrition-smart agriculture to achieve the double objective of contributing to improved human nutritional status while achieving increasing farm and/or agribusiness-level productivity or revenue – the drivers for agribusiness investment. Nutrition smart agriculture could be a strategic way to attract the attention of Ministers of Agriculture towards the importance of the sector’s contribution to the nutrition agenda. Nutrition smart agriculture practices and technologies are no-regret-type of interventions that Ministries of Agriculture could promote regardless of multisectoral coordination on the nutrition agenda. These smart agriculture interventions could complement the nutrition sensitive agenda, where multisectoriality and interinstitutional coordination has been seen as a barrier to integrating nutrition into the agriculture development agenda of countries.
