This conference “Inclusive and sustainable agribusiness development: are we fit for purpose?” will bring together a diverse range of experts from international organizations, policy makers, the private sector, NGOs and academia for a comprehensive discussion on how to understand the evolving environment and support programme design that can deliver inclusive and sustainable impact for the rural poor.

Close to 70% of the world’s poor live in rural areas and are reliant on the agricultural sector for their livelihoods. Inclusive agriculture and trade remains a powerful tool for raising rural incomes, feeding the world, creating jobs and helping communities adapt to climate change. How can the rural poor benefit more fully from integration into markets and trade?

It is increasingly recognized that generating a sustainable rural transformation requires a broader and more holistic approach beyond isolated interventions. Promoting fair and equitable agribusiness and trade needs to take into consideration changing rural demographics, migration, links to urban areas, the servicification of the rural economy, and the globalization of markets and private standards especially if it is to benefit the most vulnerable and food insecure groups.

The complexity of this changing environment has created uncertainty around how to promote inclusive and sustainable approaches and public-private partnerships to generate impact at scale.

It is clear, however, that a business as usual approach will likely not be sufficient to reach the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, and that we are in need of new ideas and approaches if we are to achieve the SDGs. What innovative methods, ways of working and alliances can we employ to better tackle these problems?

The conference

This conference will bring together a diverse range of experts from international organizations, policy makers, the private sector, NGOs and academia for a comprehensive discussion on how to understand this evolving environment and support programme design that can deliver inclusive and sustainable impact for the rural poor. Across two panels, experts will share perspectives on key trends affecting agricultural development and rural transformation and their implications on programming and interventions for inclusive and sustainable agribusiness development. Practitioners will present and share case studies and innovations underway in the field. The discussion will allow for the exchange of practices and lessons learnt. It will yield important pointers for innovative and inclusive business models, partnership approaches, effective and coordinated programing and supportive policy for agricultural trade.
