On June 18, 2019 a Food systems Community of Practice (CoP) meeting was organized by the F&BKP. The meeting brought together 21 Food and Nutrition Security professionals from policy, research and practice to exchange on how food systems approaches have been brought into practice so far to identify lessons and future perspectives. »

This new guidance note presents how a food systems approach can guide the delivery of healthy diets and the steps to take to identify policy options and drive policy change, and subsequently address all forms of malnutrition. It is important to take a food systems approach comprising four functions – food production; food handling, storage and processing; food trade and marketing; and consumer demand, food preparation and preferences, and to coordinate interventions across these functions. »

This report reveals that since 2015, hunger has been slowly on a rise, with the global level of the prevalence of undernourishment slightly below 11 percent. One of the key drivers of the increase in hunger are economic slowdowns. Hunger has been on the rise in many of the countries where the economy slowed down or contracted. »

Representatives of eight Ugandan Applied Research Fund projects gathered for a country workshop in Kampala on June 18-20, 2019. Since most of the projects are finalized, it was time to take stock of the insights and outcomes, jointly reflect, learn and work on further uptake of results. The main theme was the issue of scaling innovations from food and agricultural research and how this can be enabled in Ugandan policy and practice. »

This working paper summarizes academic litarature on food systems and systems thinking, in order to inform a system approach for the development of food and nutrition security (FNS) programming. Also a decision-support tool is developed to translate the insights on food systems invo actionable recommendations for FNS programming. »
