SUMMARY:International course "Making Agriculture Work for Food and Nutrition Security"
DESCRIPTION:The two-week international course “Making Agriculture Work for Food and Nutrition Security” is organized by Wageningen UR Centre for Development Innovation (CDI) in November 2017. \nContext\nDespite the world-wide increase of food availability 1 out of 3 people are malnourished due to undernourishment\, micronutrient deficiencies and/or overweight. Evidence shows that malnutrition has life-long detrimental impacts on learning capacity\, productivity and income-generating potential of populations. \nThe sustainable development goals aim to end hunger\, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by year 2030. Agriculture plays a key role in the provision of food and nutrition security. But agricultural programs and policies do not automatically lead to better nourished populations. In some cases these programs and policies can even be detrimental to the nutritional situation of vulnerable groups. Agricultural programs and policies need to take nutrition outcomes into account. \nEnsuring nutritional impact of agricultural programs and policies\nMaking agricultural programs nutrition sensitive \nRecent research shows that improving nutrition from the health domain only nor from the agricultural domain only brings sufficient progress\, but that progress will be highest at the intersection of agriculture\, health and nutrition. Agricultural programs and policies need to become nutrition sensitive to increase the availability and accessibility and consumption of diverse and nutritious foods.\nThis course focus on how agricultural programs and policies can become nutrition sensitive to achieve the nutrition objectives. In addition\, we will explore the different agricultural pathways leading to food and nutrition security. Experts will facilitate the course to provide you with the knowledge and skills to design and strengthen the implementation of nutrition sensitive agricultural programs and policies. The course is highly interactive\, building on the participant’s own experiences and cases. \nCourse objectives\nUpon completion of the course you will: \n\nUnderstand the definitions of food systems\, value chains\, food security\, nutrition security and their interconnectedness;\nBe able to apply conceptual frameworks to ensure nutrition sensitive agricultural development programs and policies;\nHave strengthen your competence in the design and implementation of agricultural development programs and policies to enhance the impact on nutrition.\n\nEntry requirements\nApplicants should have a BSc or equivalent in the field of agriculture\, food and nutrition security\, health\, or a related field\, and have at least three years of professional experience in governmental or local non-governmental organisation as a policy or planning officer\, or a managing or co-ordinating position in one of the field related to the course. Proficiency in English is required. \nPlease download the flyer for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Creating impact for smallholders with weather data
DESCRIPTION:The Ministry of Economic Affairs\, GODAN Action\, CTA and Wageningen UR are partnering to organize the Workshop on “Creating services for agriculture with weather data”. The workshop is hosted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in The Hague and aims at sharing experiences and learning from existing initiatives that focus on providing added value services for smallholders using (open) weather data. \nBackground\nFor farmers\, being informed about local weather conditions is essential to perform their daily work. Weather conditions are crucial for the development of crops\, the ultimate yields and the quality of harvested products. Timely weather based information will support farm management decisions\, e.g. regarding seeding date\, timing of irrigation and fertilisation and harvesting\, and allows for effective risk mitigation. Consequently it can make the difference between good and sub-optimal or even no yields. Thus\, the availability of weather data\, and especially short and medium term forecasts to act upon are key\, for farmers\, for service providers providing farm management advice and ultimately also for consumers to ensure food security. \nWorkshop aims\nThis workshop aims at sharing experiences and learning from existing initiatives that focus on providing added value services for smallholders using (open) weather data. It will focus at ways to achieve impact for smallholders and the role of standards and capacity building. The workshop will bring together actors from different networks (e.g. GODAN and GODAN Action\, G4AW) to discuss good practices for the application of weather data and viable business models that allow Dutch actors to co-create added value services in an international context and that generate impact for smallholders. \nWorkshop programme\n9:30 – 9:50 – Welcome and introduction \n\nSjoerd Croqué (Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Netherlands)\nSander Janssen (Wageningen UR)\n\n9:50 – 10:00 – Introduction to the programme (Onno Roosenschoon – GODAN Action) \n10:00 – 10:20 – Weather data as part of the data value chain towards smallholders (Chris Addison – CTA) \n10:20 – 10:40 – Potential impact of accessible weather data (Rob Lokers – GODAN Action) \n10:40 – 11:00 – Coffee break \n11:00 – 12:30 – Parallel working groups “Achieving Impact with Weather Data” \n\nWeather data for micro-finance and insurance\nWeather forecasts – early warning systems for agriculture\nWeather data for farm management advice\n\n12:30 – 13:30 – Lunch \n13:30 – 13:50 – An example of a successful end user application driven by weather data (G4AW project presentation) \n13:50 – 14:10 – Weather data standards and interoperability (speaker from GODAN Action) \n14:10– 15:45 – Parallel working groups “Importance of standards and the role of capacity building” \n\nWeather data for micro-finance and insurance\nWeather forecasts – early warning systems for agriculture\nWeather data for farm management advice\n\n15:45 – 16:00 – Coffee break \n16:00 – 16:45 – Reporting back from the working groups and discussion (Rob Lokers\, session facilitators) \n16:45 – 17:00 – Conclusions (Sander Janssen) \n17:00 – 18:30 – Drinks and buffet \nOrganizers\nThe Ministry of Economic Affairs\, GODAN Action\, CTA and Wageningen UR are partnering to organise the Workshop on Creating services for agriculture with weather data. The workshop is hosted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. \nGODAN Action is a three year project funded by DFID to enable data users\, producers and intermediaries to engage effectively with open data and maximise its potential for impact in the agriculture and nutrition sectors. In particular it aims to strengthen capacity\, to promote common standards and best practice and to improve how we measure impact. \nThe Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) is a joint international institution of the African\, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States and the European Union (EU). Its mission is to advance food security\, resilience and inclusive economic growth in Africa\, the Caribbean and the Pacific through innovations in sustainable agriculture. CTA operates under the framework of the Cotonou Agreement and is funded by the EU. \nRegistration\nFollow this link for online registration. \n
