SUMMARY:WUR Summer School on greenhouse horticulture
DESCRIPTION:Wageningen University & Research centre is the “knowledge heart” of the Dutch Greenhouse Horticulture\, which is the most advanced and productive in the world. During the “Summer School on Greenhouse Horticulture”\, Wageningen UR scientists will again share their unique knowledge with international students and researchers. \nSummerschool outline\nAfter a general introduction on Greenhouse Horticulture and a cursory review of important topics\, crop\, climate and root zone management will be explored in more detail\, in a varied and attractive mix of lectures\, practical case work\, company visits and seminars by relevant actors and experts. The “social factor” will not be neglected: there will be joint dinners and a programme for the weekend can be prepared. \nTarget group\nThis excellent and intensive Summer School is meant for MSc and PhD students\, post-docs\, junior scientists and professionals working in the field from all over the world. Particular attention has been given to develop a program that relates to and is interesting for protected cultivation with less technology than is usual in the Netherlands. SUMMARY:Online Bootcamp Building your Inclusive Agribusiness
DESCRIPTION:The online bootcamp on building your inclusive agribusiness will take place in September 2017. 2SCALE will teach participants how partnerships and bottom-up innovations can help build a profitable and inclusive agribusiness. \n2SCALE is an agribusiness incubator aiming to improve rural livelihoods and food & nutrition security in Africa by accelerating inclusive business in agri-food industries. Through public-private partnerships\, smallholder farmers and local agribusiness work together on organizing access to inputs\, strengthening market intelligence and bargaining power\, and other interventions to make their value chains more inclusive. In this course 2SCALE will present methodologies and practical tools used to build this inclusiveness. \nTarget groups\n\nEntrepreneurs in developing countries who would like to expand or improve their business for and with low-income communities;\nRepresentatives of farmer organizations;\nStaff of intermediary organisations working with local entrepreneurs\, such as NGOs\, business development services or investors;\nStudents in business related fields who would like to learn about the potential and practicalities of being inclusive business entrepreneurs.\n\nTopics to cover\nThe participants in the online course will gain knowledge on the tools and methodologies used by 2SCALE\, such as the CASE approach\, partnership development tools and others. Practical examples from 2SCALE partnerships from the 8 different program countries will be used to illustrate how this has worked in the 2SCALE context. \nThe program will tackle the following topics: \n\nValue Creation: learn how to access local markets and create value for and with smallholder farmers and other business actors in the value chain;\nInnovations in Farming: learn how to strengthen your supply chains and increase returns to local farmers and SMEs by introducing innovations\, based on needs assessment;\nAccess to Finance: learn how to secure access to finance in your value chains by building innovative financing solutions at farmer and SME level;\nAgribusiness Clusters: learn how to effectively organise local farmers to ensure innovation and competitiveness\, to maximize local value creation and to empower farmers.\n\nLearning environment\nThese topics will be addressed in 4 interrelated modules that you can follow at your own convenience over a 4-week period. \nEach module consists of videos\, background reading material\, and an assignment. On the module level\, there is room to interact with other course participants. DESCRIPTION:The International Conference on Research for Development (ICRD) 2017 is the fourth in the conference series. Its umbrella theme this year is “Evidence. Engagement. Policies”. A hallmark of the ICRD series is the space it provides for international research collaborations with a strong representation of partners from countries in Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America. \nThe ICRD series was originally launched in 2004 by the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) North-South; the ICRD 2017 builds on the achievements of these earlier conferences and on the r4d programme – a unique partnership to tackle global challenges. \nThe conference offers a platform for researchers\, policymakers\, civil society\, and others to come together and engage in creative dialogue and concerted action. ICRD 2017 will focus on research for sustainable development\, in particular on improving our understanding of how evidence can support policies for transformation in countries of Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America. This includes considering how the scientific community responds to knowledge needs\, how decision-makers involve researchers\, how evidence-based policymaking can be realized\, and how alternative\, non-linear science–policy–practice interactions might look. We encourage creative\, interdisciplinary\, and interactive contributions offering visionary\, transformative pathways to sustainable development worldwide. \nICRD 2017 has the following specific goals: \n\nTo stimulate scientific debate on current research topics of global sustainable development;\nTo establish and intensify dialogue between science\, policy\, and practice for enhancing research for development and promotion of more evidence-based development cooperation;\nTo strengthen networks of transnational\, inter- and transdisciplinary research partnerships for global sustainable development;\nTo provide space for efforts to begin synthesizing the five thematic areas of the r4d programme (social conflicts\, employment\, food security\, ecosystems\, and public health)\, which reflect the priority areas of Swiss international development cooperation.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Urban Agri Summit 2017 is the platform to learn and share ideas on how to revolutionize agriculture and bring the industry into the technology-enabled future. It takes place in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, on September 7 and 8\, 2017\, and launches successful commercial indoor farming in Africa and its cities.  \nThe world’s population is expected to increase by about 3 billion by 2050 & it is forecasted that nearly 80% of that population will live in urban centres. Africa’s urban growth rate is at 3.5% the highest in the world and double the world average. \nThe Challenge of growing enough healthy food for Africa’s growing cities is enormous. At the same time\, the stresses of climate change\, and the declining availability of arable land and fresh water are challenging conventional agriculture as never before. \nMany countries and companies are expressing strong interest in vertical farming business & urban agriculture. It is a solution to the weather and pests problems\, food security\, climate change and environmental preservation. Commercialization of vertical farming is catching on in Asia\, Europe\, USA\, Russia & now Africa. Many private companies are interested in growing crops in hydroponic\, aquaponics & aeroponics systems in warehouses\, greenhouses\, containers & high scrapers. There is also a burgeoning interest in the production of medicinal plants in vertical farms. \nAfrica has unique opportunities for vertical farms.
