SUMMARY:IARSAF 20th Annual Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The International Association of Research Scholars and Fellows (IARSAF) of IITA organizes her annual symposium which creates opportunities for students to interact and exchange ideas on their research activities. The theme of this year’s symposium is “Contributions of IITA postgraduate students’ research for transforming African agriculture”. \nThis 20th annual symposium coincides with the IITA 50th Anniversary. This ground-shaking occasion promises to attract many stakeholders in Agricultural business and top researchers in Africa. Participants will include presidents of some agricultural organizations (IFAD\, AfDB\, FARA etc.)\, Agriculture Ministers\, Directors General\, agricultural donor agencies\, IITA partners\, research students and staff of agricultural research institutes. \nThematic areas\n\nNatural Resource Management\nPlant Production and Plant Health\nBiotechnology and Genetic Improvement\nSocial Science and Agro-business\nFood and Nutrition Science\n\nScholarship opportunity is available for 5 students with very good abstracts from locations outside Ibadan. \nAbstracts for both poster and oral presentations on research work can be submitted until June 15\, 2017. Please note that abstracts must be in line with at least one of the above-mentioned thematic areas of IITA. \nPlease follow this link for details on registration\, call for abstract and deadlines. \nAbout IARSAF-IITA\nThe International Association of Research Scholars and Fellows (IARSAF) comprises of young vibrant graduate students of agriculture and all other affiliate fields conducting research activities at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The core objectives of the association are to create a forum that fosters exchange of academic and research ideas among graduate students and to promote social interactions among researchers. These are needed to build strong network of young scientists across the world and Africa in particular. Towards achieving these lofty objectives\, a symposium is organized annually. \n

DESCRIPTION:From July 10 till July 19\, the meeting of the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development in 2017 will take place. On July 11\, the implementation of SDG2 &#8211;   End hunger\, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture &#8211; will be reviewed at the UN Headquarters\, conference room 4.  \nHigh-Level Political Forum 2017\nThe meeting of the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development in 2017 convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council\, will be held from Monday\, July 10 to Wednesday\, July 19\, 2017. \nThe theme will be &#8220;Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world&#8220;. The set of goals to be reviewed in depth will be the following\, including Goal 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development\, that will be considered each year: \n\nGoal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere.\nGoal 2. End hunger\, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.\nGoal 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.\nGoal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.\nGoal 9. Build resilient infrastructure\, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.\nGoal 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans\, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.\n\nFor more information on the High-Level Political Forum 2017\, please visit the website. \nReview of SDGs implementation: SDG2\nThis session will bring together a diverse group of experts and stakeholders in an interactive dialogue on progress in ensuring food security\, improving nutrition\, and promoting food systems and agricultural practices that are sustainable\, resilient and inclusive. Linking sustainable agriculture to poverty eradication and gender equality—including equal access to land and water\, markets\, technology and social protection—is crucial to enhancing the livelihoods smallholder farmers\, and to restoring\, safeguarding\, developing and promoting sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources. The scale and complexity of the food security crises caused by conflict and natural disasters have increased dramatically in recent years and represent a significant threat to sustainable development.
