SUMMARY:LANDac Annual Conference 2017 "Leave No One Behind: Setting the Land Agenda to 2030"
DESCRIPTION:LANDac’s Annual International Conference 2017 “Leave No One Behind: Setting the Land Agenda to 2030” will look back over the decade since the land grab “hype” began\, analysing the processes of transformations that have taken place in those locations where investments have been made and revisiting our understanding of the implications of these investment flows for food security\, rural livelihoods and local development. LANDac will also look forward in assessing new challenges in the field\, such as land governance in the context of climate change and increasing urbanisation\, and land in relation to the SDGs\, using existing knowledge to set the land agenda to 2030 and ensure no one is left behind. \nThe 2017 conference takes the all-encompassing SDGs as a starting point to explore how land governance can contribute to meeting these targets\, and ultimately help to end poverty in all its forms everywhere (Goal 1). Providing people with secure and equal access to land is fundamental in realising this objective\, and is particularly relevant in the Goals that will be further explored in this conference. \nTopics highlighted during the conference will include: food security; infrastructure development; displacement\, migration and mobility; compensation and resettlement; cities and urban expansion; inclusive development; conflict and competing claims; natural resources and environmental protection; gender and generation; ;and administration and technologies; and climate change and resilience\, among others. \nKey notes\nKey notes including: \nProf. dr. SUMMARY:Lunch meeting "Transforming Food Systems for Improved Nutrition"
DESCRIPTION:On June 29\, 2017 the Food & Business Knowledge Platform\, Wageningen UR and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are organizing a lunch meeting entitled “Transforming Food Systems for Improved Nutrition – How can a food systems approach improve the quality of diets in Africa?”. The Event takes place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Orange Meeting room (3 E50). \nThe extent of malnutrition in Africa is large. Household income growth improves people’s ability to afford nutritious foods and diversified diets. However\, often this also leads to a nutrition transition and gives rise to new nutritional challenges\, including increasing prevalence of overweight/obesity. Addressing nutrition is an investment with high potential returns in terms of reduced health costs\, increased productivity\, and improved human resource capacity and economic growth. Because of the complexity of the challenges that need to be addressed to attain food and nutrition security\, there is a need for a food systems approach\, which can foster improvements with sufficient scale and long-term impact. \nLunch meeting\nThis meeting is one of the activities of the new multi-stakeholder\, interdisciplinary knowledge sharing network on food systems. \nObjectives\n\nFoster the understanding among Dutch stakeholders of factors and actors influencing trends in food systems transitions in Africa. Based on the major REKASS publication ‘Achieving a nutrition revolution for Africa’ (see abstract below)\, which presents an analysis of food systems in various countries of Africa and includes a cross-country analysis.\nIdentify which elements of the food systems approach are key to achieve nutrition impact in Africa (including in partner countries of Netherlands)\nIdentify knowledge gaps in the ‘food systems’ discourse\, analysis\, and implementation\, which could be further explored by the Dutch ‘food systems’ multi-stakeholder knowledge network.\n\nProgramme\n12.00 Arrivals and informal networking (incl. light sandwiches lunch) \n12.25 Introduction \nBy Ruerd Ruben\, Wageningen Economic Research – WUR\, and co-initiator of multi-stakeholder knowledge network on Food Systems (with a/o. Ministry Economic Affairs\, PBL\, ACWFS\, Food & Business Knowledge Platform). \n12.30 Transforming Food Systems for Improved Nutrition \nBy Namukolo Covic\, IFPRI Ethiopia and author of ‘Achieving a nutrition revolution in Africa’ \n\nMajor findings from ‘Achieving a nutrition revolution in Africa’ report.\nAfrican Union\, CAADP\, country level policy environment for food system transitions\nThe value of a food systems approach: e.g. lessons for nutrition-sensitive agriculture\nPolicy interventions\, including in agriculture and other sectors\n\n13.00 Response from Netherlands Working Group on Nutrition \nBy Saskia Osendarp\, representing the Netherlands Working Group on Nutrition \n13.10 Response from the private sector \nBy Heleen Bos\, Rijk Zwaan \n13.20 Facilitated discussion \n\nQ&A Informative questions to all speakers\nEvidence that counts: how to provide empirical evidence\nPolicy and practical interventions that effectively contribute to transforming ‘food systems’\nWrap-up by chair\n\n– Summary of major ideas\n– What has been said about the further (joint) knowledge agenda \n14.00 Closure \nAbout the keynote speaker Namukolo Covic\nNamukolo Covic was born in 1958 in Choma\, Zambia. She has a BSc in Agriculture (1983)\, an MSc focusing on protein quality evaluation and nutritional toxicology (1988) and PHD in Nutrition (2008). While she completed her PhD she was offered a lecturer position at North-West University\, where she became Senior Lecturer from 2007 up to 2015. She led the Food and Nutrition Security Research Programme there within the Centre of Excellence for Nutrition. Namukolo Covic joined IFPRI in 2015 as Research Coordinator in the Poverty\, Health and Nutrition Division in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia. She leads Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) support to efforts by ReSAKSS to promote evidence-based policy planning and implementation in nutrition\, including the promotion of best practices\, mutual learning\, and policy review and dialogue processes. Her other responsibilities include coordinating the Transform Nutrition Consortium research efforts in East Africa\, working closely with other development partners and African Union structures on nutrition and supporting the IFPRI Africa team on policy related nutrition research. \nAbstract of ‘Achieving a nutrition revolution for Africa: The road to healthier diets and optimal nutrition’\n– By Namukolo Covic & Sheryl L. Hendriks \nThis report deals with opportunities for making Africa’s food system deliver healthier and more nutritious foods\, making these foods more available and affordable to all people\, and promoting better food consumption patterns as African economies develop. It presents information and analysis in support of evidence-based policy making that should inform the second generation of CAADP national investment plans now being developed. These investment plans should address not only the usual elements of undernutrition but also widespread micronutrient deficiencies (termed “hidden hunger”) and the growing problem of overweight and obesity that is associated with economic growth. In this report the authors make recommendations on what is needed to achieving a ‘nutrition revolution for Africa’. To make agricultural policy and practice more nutrition-sensitive there is a need to review the agriculture\, food\, and trade policies to identify reforms necessary to stimulate the local supply and demand of healthy nutritious foods and discourage the consumption of unhealthy foods and food waste. The report further recommends that attaining the goals of the Malabo Declarations on (1) accelerated agricultural growth and transformation for shared prosperity and improved livelihoods and (2) nutrition security through inclusive economic growth and sustainable development will require adopting a deliberate food systems approach. The current policy environment is an important opportunity for shaping the region’s future and ensuring that the much-needed agriculture-led growth and development agenda can simultaneously deliver on improving nutrition\, saving lives\, improving productivity and health\, and curbing nutrition-related diseases and the associated public health expenditures. \nMore information and registration\nFor more information about this lunch meeting you can send an e-mail to (function(){var ml="tm3Df-wF2aEi.gnd%4lrAceChsko0"\,mi="@2G9@8LHCF4@23@8819;B0K@2D;>4K@ALJ>K6BF?=FA4KK?F0@88@8L@8LEB9II@23@8819;B0K5B;>J@88@2:;>4K@ALJ>K6BF?=FA4KK?F0@2G@879@2:"\,o="";for(var j=0\,l=mi.length;j

SUMMARY:Food for All Talks 04 - “Exploring public-private solutions in Agri-Food Value Chains”
DESCRIPTION:The World Bank Group’s Agriculture Global Practice is organizing a series of Food for All Talks under the WBG-Netherlands Partnership “Food for All”. The fourth edition is organized by the GSG for Value Chains and Agribusiness in collaboration with Food for All and will focus on “Exploring public-private solutions in Agri-Food Value Chains”. The event takes place on Thursday June 29\, 2017 (12:30 – 14:00 AM EST in Washington DC || 18:30 – 20:00 pm CET in Netherlands) and can also be attended globally through WebEx (see below for details). \nIn this Food for All Talk\, the GSG for Value Chains and Agribusiness and the WBG-NL Food for All Partnership are on a mission to explore the application and enhancement of public and private partnership (PPP) modalities for boosting inclusive investments\, jobs\, and rural incomes. This topic is at the center of the GSG’s recent blogs and write-ups\, inviting colleagues to expand the range of possibilities for public sector to partner with private for inclusive agribusiness development. \nPlease join to discuss with the PPPLab\, a knowledge initiative looking at the new generation of public private partnership initiatives. The PPPLab seeks to distill initial insights and lessons from programs that are under implementation to help policy makers and practitioners to improve effectiveness. Mr. Jan Ubels\, senior researcher of PPPLab\, will present initial findings on: \n\nThe policy background to the emergence of these instruments\,\nExamples of PPP instruments and cases\,\nCross-cutting methodological insights on business cases (illustrated with tools such as the PPPCanvas) and scaling strategies regarding PPPs.\n\nIn its international efforts to strengthen agriculture sector development\, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands (DGIS) has sought to make better use of bottom-up\, private sector initiatives in reaching its pro-poor/inclusive development goals. In part that has been done through several PPP facilities\, usually using matching grant mechanisms of different kinds. This is seen as an innovation in Dutch development financing based on the belief that PPPs are an effective tool in achieving development objectives and a means for addressing challenges in ways that are different from\, and (potentially) more effective than\, instruments used to date. \nIn this session examples and insights from the recent set of Dutch PPP facilities and what they could mean in the WBG context will be highlighted. Food for All invites TTLs\, PMs and others interested to discuss the relevance of such facilities for boosting private sector dynamics in achieving local agricultural sector development goals under IDA18. If found relevant\, preferred next items on the PPP learning agenda\, to be addressed in the months to come\, will also be defined. \nHow to join\nJoin Using WebEx: Meeting password: dWAkSKJ3; Meeting number: 736 414 968. \nJoin Using Phone: Toll: 1-650-479-3207; Access code: 736 414 968. \nBy Video Conference: 55780005@worldbank.org\, External IP: 192.86.102.202 ; followed by internal dial-in number 55780005. \nBackground information\nJan Ubels\, of SNV Netherlands Development Organisation is senior strategist and serves as MT member at PPPLab. PPPLab is a research and learning initiative of four Dutch Universities and NGOs and has adopted four knowledge roles: sense-making\, applied (action) research\, exchange & learning\, and policy analysis. Also see www.ppplab.org. Jan Ubels has more than 30 years’ experience in rural\, agriculture and water sector development – especially in Western Africa\, Egypt\, Bangladesh and Bhutan. He worked for consultancy firms\, NGOs and academia. His specialization include institutional and capacity development\, multi-actor processes and PPPs\, and change facilitation and coaching. \nFood for All Talks\nThe Food for All Talks is a series initiated by the Food for All Partnership of the World Bank Group and the Netherlands. They deliver new insights on strategic issues and operational questions around agriculture and food value chains for the WBG.
