SUMMARY:African Nutrition Epidemiology Conference (ANEC VII)
DESCRIPTION:SMN is organizing the seventh African Nutrition Epidemiology Conference in Marrakesh\, Morocco from October 9 till 14. This year&#8217;s theme for the conference is &#8220;Nutrition dynamics in Africa : Opportunities and challenges for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals’’. During the conference\, nutritionists from different backgrounds (health\, agriculture\, human sciences etc…) will gather. \nThe incentives beyond the chosen theme are multiple: \nFirst\, the International Conference on Nutrition recently held in Rome recommended to raise the profile of nutrition within relevant national strategies\, policies\, actions plans and programs\, and align national resources accordingly to improve nutrition by strengthening human and institutional. \nSecondly\, FAO and WHO  were called\, in collaboration with other United Nations agencies\, funds and programs\, as well as other international organizations\, to support national governments\, upon request\, in developing\, strengthening and implementing their policies\, programs and plans to address the multiple challenges of malnutrition. \nThirdly\,  further efforts and a strong global partnership for development are needed to accelerate progress and reach the goals  not accomplished by 2015 concerning the Millennium Development Objectives. \nFourthly\, WHO nutrition strategies implementation 2010-2020 will be at their  mid term in 2016. Time to  have an insight on these strategies outcomes.. \nFifth\, Morocco more now than before is gearing its Sustainable development policies toward the South and hopefully will permit a fruitful sharing and  high performances in Nutrition\, Health and Society \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Democratizing Food Governance
DESCRIPTION:The Conference &#8220;Democratizing Food Governance&#8221; will promote a reflection on the new forms of partnership and civic engagement emerging around food: the way they function\, their strengths and weaknesses\, their successes and failures\, the opportunities they offer as well as the limitations they face in their operation.  More generally\, a reflection will be encouraged on the creation of public policy spaces at different scales where different types of actors – ordinary citizens\, experts from different epistemic backgrounds and civil society organizations as well as representatives of state agencies and institutions and private firms – may negotiate\, deliberate and make decisions with the goal of enhancing the sustainable and democratic character of the food system. \nAims of the Conference\n\nTo review theories and empirical evidence of reflexive\, adaptive and empowered participative forms of governance of the food system:  from foodsheds\, to food policy councils\, to solidarity economy districts and to the construction of networks at different scales (city\, region\, national and international).\nTo contribute to the reflection on regulatory mechanisms and policies that favor cooperation\, social justice and democracy in the food economy and across different levels of development.\n\nThemes of the Conference\n\nSustainability\, food security and new forms of governance\nEmerging new forms of coordination among local food initiatives at different scales\nExamples of networks and partnerships in the food economy: how they work; constraints and strengths; successes and failures.\nThe role of civil society\, the State\, the private sector and consumers in the new forms of governance\nThe role of the State in creating spaces for empowered and participative forms of governance in the food economy\nNew forms of regulation and new policies for the emerging regional and local-based food system\nInstitutional mechanisms striving for balance of power among actors in networks and partnerships.\nThe subsidiarity principle: its role and implementation in the governance of the emerging food systems.\nThe role of different forms of knowledge – local and expert – in the new forms of governance of local-based food economies\nAccess to data and information in the public domain\nThe voice of local actors in the new forms of governance\nModern supply chains and local food initiatives\nPublic food procurement\, food banks and school lunch programs\nInnovation and learning among actors at various scales\nHow to favour convergence toward the ‘common good’ in the food economy among different stake-holders\nCreating new public policy space for re-shaping food planning agendas.\n\nKeynote speakers\nFrank Baber\nProfessor\, Environmental Science and Policy Program\,  and Director\, Graduate Center for Public Policy and Administration\, University of California\, Long Beach \nTerry Marsden \nChair of Environmental Policy and Planning\, Director of the Sustainable Places Research Institute\, Cardiff University \n\n

SUMMARY:World Food Day ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The official World Food Day ceremony at FAO Headquarters will take place on Friday\, October 14\, 2016. The Director-General of FAO will be joined by the Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi and keynote speakers\, HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa of Morocco and Macharia Kamau\, United Nations Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate. The audience will also hear a special message on food security from His Holiness\, Pope Francis and an address by the heads of the other UN Rome-based agencies\, IFAD and WFP. Tune in to the World Food Day website at 10.00 on October 14 to watch the ceremony live. \nThe official celebration of World Food Day at FAO Headquarters on October 14\, 2016 will coincide with the second annual meeting of mayors committed to the “Milan Urban Food Policy Pact”. This is the first international protocol that calls for cities to develop sustainable food systems that grant healthy and accessible food to all\, protect biodiversity and reduce food waste. \nThis year at FAO\, mayors will discuss their efforts\, and share experiences and best practices. \nAn exhibition will also be held at FAO throughout World Food Week.  Actions to combat climate change and hunger will demonstrate to the public how by changing simple daily habits\, we can all make a difference. The exhibition will also feature winners of the World Food Day Contest \n
