SUMMARY:FNS Forum online consultation - Maximizing the Impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:The FNS Forum online consultation “Maximizing the impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition” is part of a wider discussion to help elaborate the Work Programme for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. FAO invites appropriate stakeholders all over the world to engage and be connected in a meaningful way. Start of the consultation is on September 20\, 2016 and it is possible to contribute till October 11\, 2016. \nBackground\nWith the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, the world has committed to eradicate hunger and eliminate all forms of malnutrition by 2030. The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025) proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on April 1\, 2016 calls for accelerated global action to achieve this goal. \nThe UN General Assembly Resolution places the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition in the context of follow-up to the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2). It tasks the co-convenors of ICN2\, FAO and WHO\, to organize the implementation of the Decade through an inclusive and participatory process\, working “with existing institutions and with available resources”. The UNSCN is supporting this effort by initiating an online discussion to collect the ideas of all relevant actors. Specifically\, and taking the ICN2 outcomes as a framework\, the UNSCN wants to know what elements you believe should be taken into consideration in the development of the Work Programme for the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. \nThe consultation\nFAO and WHO would therefore like appropriate stakeholders to share their views on how best to maximise the potential of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. Participants may want to consider the following questions: \n\nWhat are your expectations for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition and how could it make a significant difference in improving nutrition and food security of the people in your country within the next ten years?\nWhat critical activities need to be included in the Work Programme for the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition to reach the 2025 global nutrition targets? Which activities would need to be accelerated in your country to reach these targets? How could these activities be funded?\nWhat can be done to accelerate and improve the quality of commitments from the various actors? What role(s) should public and private actors play in monitoring their implementation?\nHow can other relevant forums\, such as the CFS and the UNSCN\, contribute\, and how can other movements (e.g. human rights\, environment) be involved in the Decade?\n\nVisit the FAO website to participate in the consultation. \nAbout the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition\nThe Decade is a global effort driven by Members States of the United Nations and convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP)\, the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)\, and including other UN bodies and other entities such as the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN). \n

SUMMARY:African Nutrition Epidemiology Conference (ANEC VII)
DESCRIPTION:SMN is organizing the seventh African Nutrition Epidemiology Conference in Marrakesh\, Morocco from October 9 till 14. This year’s theme for the conference is “Nutrition dynamics in Africa : Opportunities and challenges for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals’’. During the conference\, nutritionists from different backgrounds (health\, agriculture\, human sciences etc…) will gather. \nThe incentives beyond the chosen theme are multiple: \nFirst\, the International Conference on Nutrition recently held in Rome recommended to raise the profile of nutrition within relevant national strategies\, policies\, actions plans and programs\, and align national resources accordingly to improve nutrition by strengthening human and institutional. \nSecondly\, FAO and WHO were called\, in collaboration with other United Nations agencies\, funds and programs\, as well as other international organizations\, to support national governments\, upon request\, in developing\, strengthening and implementing their policies\, programs and plans to address the multiple challenges of malnutrition. \nThirdly\, further efforts and a strong global partnership for development are needed to accelerate progress and reach the goals not accomplished by 2015 concerning the Millennium Development Objectives. \nFourthly\, WHO nutrition strategies implementation 2010-2020 will be at their mid term in 2016. Time to have an insight on these strategies outcomes.. \nFifth\, Morocco more now than before is gearing its Sustainable development policies toward the South and hopefully will permit a fruitful sharing and high performances in Nutrition\, Health and Society \n \n\n

SUMMARY:FAO e-conference: Contribution of small farms to FNS
DESCRIPTION:FAO’s Research & Extension Unit is organizing a moderated e-mail conference from October 10 to 23\, 2016 entitled “Exploring the contribution of small farms to achieving food security and improved nutrition”. \nBackground to the e-conference\nThe Research & Extension Unit is hosting this e-mail conference as part of its contributions to an EU-funded Horizon 2020 research project on “Small Farms\, Small Food Businesses and Sustainable Food Security” (SALSA). In this 4-year project\, which began in April 2016\, FAO is collaborating with 16 European and African partners to develop a better understanding of the current and potential contribution of small farms and small food businesses to sustainable food and nutrition security in an increasingly globalised and uncertain world. \nThe e-mail conference will allow participants from around the world to share and discuss their experiences\, lessons learned and perspectives on the contribution of small farms to food security and nutrition. The kinds of issues to be discussed will include\, inter alia\, the characterization of small farms; the current (and future) contribution of small farms to the different dimensions of food security; and the best approaches for researchers to use to evaluate the contribution of small farms to food security. \nHow to join\nThe conference is open to everyone\, is free and will be moderated. To subscribe to the conference\, send an e-mail to listserv@listserv.fao.org with the following one line in the body of the message (leave the subject line blank):\nsubscribe small-farms-L firstname lastname\nwhere firstname and lastname refer to the person’s first and last name. For example\, if the subscriber’s name is Joan Smith\, then the line should be:\nsubscribe small-farms-L Joan Smith \nA background document is being prepared and will be sent to subscribers before the conference begins.
