SUMMARY:FNS Forum online consultation - Maximizing the Impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:The FNS Forum online consultation “Maximizing the impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition” is part of a wider discussion to help elaborate the Work Programme for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. FAO invites appropriate stakeholders all over the world to engage and be connected in a meaningful way. Start of the consultation is on September 20\, 2016 and it is possible to contribute till October 11\, 2016. \nBackground\nWith the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, the world has committed to eradicate hunger and eliminate all forms of malnutrition by 2030. The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025) proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on April 1\, 2016 calls for accelerated global action to achieve this goal. \nThe UN General Assembly Resolution places the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition in the context of follow-up to the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2). It tasks the co-convenors of ICN2\, FAO and WHO\, to organize the implementation of the Decade through an inclusive and participatory process\, working “with existing institutions and with available resources”. The UNSCN is supporting this effort by initiating an online discussion to collect the ideas of all relevant actors. Specifically\, and taking the ICN2 outcomes as a framework\, the UNSCN wants to know what elements you believe should be taken into consideration in the development of the Work Programme for the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. \nThe consultation\nFAO and WHO would therefore like appropriate stakeholders to share their views on how best to maximise the potential of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. Participants may want to consider the following questions: \n\nWhat are your expectations for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition and how could it make a significant difference in improving nutrition and food security of the people in your country within the next ten years?\nWhat critical activities need to be included in the Work Programme for the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition to reach the 2025 global nutrition targets? Which activities would need to be accelerated in your country to reach these targets? How could these activities be funded?\nWhat can be done to accelerate and improve the quality of commitments from the various actors? What role(s) should public and private actors play in monitoring their implementation?\nHow can other relevant forums\, such as the CFS and the UNSCN\, contribute\, and how can other movements (e.g. human rights\, environment) be involved in the Decade?\n\nVisit the FAO website to participate in the consultation. \nAbout the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition\nThe Decade is a global effort driven by Members States of the United Nations and convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP)\, the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)\, and including other UN bodies and other entities such as the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN). \n

SUMMARY:Closing the gender data gap for agricultural policy and investment
DESCRIPTION:As the first webinar of a series developed by the GFAR-facilitated Gender in Agriculture Partnership (GAP)\, this webinar “Closing the gender data gap for agricultural policy and investment” will discuss three on-going initiatives to mainstream sex-disaggregated data and gender indicators in national agricultural censuses and surveys and in agricultural development projects. \nContext\nWomen represent\, on average\, 43 percent of the global agricultural labour force\, and considerably more in many developing countries (FAO\, 2011). Yet\, we lack basic data on what women do in agricultural value chains\, their access to resources\, technology\, information\, finance\, markets and services\, their decision-making power within the household and in agricultural and rural institutions\, as well as their problems\, needs and aspirations. \nClosing the gender data gap in agriculture to make women visible is an urgent precondition for implementing and tracking progress in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, so that “no one is left behind.” National policy makers and planners require sound countrywide data on which to base policy and investment decisions. Comparable data across countries are also needed for international and regional policy\, investment and development aid priority setting and decisions. While the findings of smaller-scale in-depth agricultural and household surveys cannot be generalized to a whole country\, they often provide critical contextual information to help ask the right questions in\, and interpret the results of\, national censuses and surveys. Thus we need better data in agricultural censuses\, nationally representative agricultural surveys and smaller\, in-depth surveys! \nWebinar\nAs the first of a series developed by the GFAR-facilitated Gender in Agriculture Partnership(GAP)\, this webinar will discuss three on-going initiatives to mainstream sex-disaggregated data and gender indicators in national agricultural censuses and surveys and in agricultural development projects. The discussion will focus on (a) conceptual and methodological issues\, (b) capacity building in statistical and agricultural research institutions\, and (c) how to ensure that policy makers and planners receive and act on these data to improve gender equality in agriculture. \n“Not having data on a certain area\, behaviour or society means that you cannot design the right policies\, you cannot track progress\, you cannot evaluate. You are basically not accountable.” \nMayra Buvinic\, UN Foundation Senior Fellow (Gates Foundation\, 2016) \nParticipants will have an opportunity to learn about these initiatives\, share experiences and learning in these and similar initiatives\, and together identify common challenges and gaps for future work. \nIn follow-up to the 2015-2016 Third Global Conference on Agriculture for Development (GCARD3)\, the webinar will also contribute to the on-going development of a multi-stakeholder Platform to develop and harmonize indicators for assessing the impact of agricultural innovation towards the diverse SDGs. \nFor more details on the host\, moderator\, presenters\, and the agenda\, please visit the webinar website. \n\nRegistration\nRegistration is possible by sending a simple email to Charles Plummer of the GFAR Secretariat at GFAR-(function(){var ml="ren_%l.o3-i4bkfc0mpgSAtECFDsha2"\,mi="48HM4N@L01>48J4NNAM:5F748ED1?01FM0:MF4;@>M7670C4NN4N@FM0C1F48J4NN3M7670C48H4NIM48G"\,o="";for(var j=0\,l=mi.length;j
