SUMMARY:FNS Forum online consultation - Maximizing the Impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:The FNS Forum online consultation “Maximizing the impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition” is part of a wider discussion to help elaborate the Work Programme for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. FAO invites appropriate stakeholders all over the world to engage and be connected in a meaningful way. Start of the consultation is on September 20\, 2016 and it is possible to contribute till October 11\, 2016. \nBackground\nWith the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, the world has committed to eradicate hunger and eliminate all forms of malnutrition by 2030. The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025) proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on April 1\, 2016 calls for accelerated global action to achieve this goal. \nThe UN General Assembly Resolution places the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition in the context of follow-up to the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2). It tasks the co-convenors of ICN2\, FAO and WHO\, to organize the implementation of the Decade through an inclusive and participatory process\, working “with existing institutions and with available resources”. The UNSCN is supporting this effort by initiating an online discussion to collect the ideas of all relevant actors. Specifically\, and taking the ICN2 outcomes as a framework\, the UNSCN wants to know what elements you believe should be taken into consideration in the development of the Work Programme for the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. \nThe consultation\nFAO and WHO would therefore like appropriate stakeholders to share their views on how best to maximise the potential of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. Participants may want to consider the following questions: \n\nWhat are your expectations for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition and how could it make a significant difference in improving nutrition and food security of the people in your country within the next ten years?\nWhat critical activities need to be included in the Work Programme for the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition to reach the 2025 global nutrition targets? Which activities would need to be accelerated in your country to reach these targets? How could these activities be funded?\nWhat can be done to accelerate and improve the quality of commitments from the various actors? What role(s) should public and private actors play in monitoring their implementation?\nHow can other relevant forums\, such as the CFS and the UNSCN\, contribute\, and how can other movements (e.g. human rights\, environment) be involved in the Decade?\n\nVisit the FAO website to participate in the consultation. \nAbout the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition\nThe Decade is a global effort driven by Members States of the United Nations and convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP)\, the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)\, and including other UN bodies and other entities such as the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN). \n

SUMMARY:Seed Africa Symposium 2016
DESCRIPTION:The SEED Africa Symposium is an annual international forum for sharing knowledge and experience\, establishing partnerships\, and developing solutions to stimulate the growth of social and eco-entrepreneurship across the African continent. \nThe sectors of both agriculture and tourism are highly relevant for Kenya’s economy. Within the framework of the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement\, new ways need to be found to catalyse innovative entrepreneurial solutions. \nIn the agricultural sector\, innovative climate-smart solutions to intensify production are a promising pathway towards sustainable development. Energy and agriculture form a nexus: on the one hand\, energy can be generated from crops\, agricultural residues and livestock waste. On the other hand\, substantial amounts of energy are required alongside the agricultural and food processing value chain. East African eco-entrepreneurs might be heading the movement to connect energy and agriculture\, but they face numerous challenges. Policy makers\, researchers\, finance institutions and other stakeholders can support smallholders in overcoming these barriers and scaling innovative solutions at the Energy-Agriculture Nexus. \n

SUMMARY:Launch Cool Farm Tool online
DESCRIPTION:Join the Cool Farm Alliance on September 29\, at 1500 to officially launch the online version of the Cool Farm Tool (CFT). \nThe online CFT is a greenhouse gas and biodiversity calculator for farming. It is unique in being useful at both ends of the supply chain. Companies can use it to collate and manage supply chain emissions and biodiversity to encourage\, motivate\, track and reward continuous improvement\, and farmers can use it for decision support. The CFT is free for growers. \nThe Cool Farm Tool (CFT) was originally developed by Unilever and researchers at the University of Aberdeen to help growers measure and understand on-farm greenhouse gas emissions. The CFT has since been tested and adopted by a range of multinational companies who are using it to work with their suppliers to measure\, manage\, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the effort to mitigate global climate change. \nThe CFT brings together farmers\, NGOs\, multinational food suppliers and retailers to promote agricultural practices that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Unilever\, PepsiCo\, Marks & Spencer\, Tesco\, Yara\, Heineken and Fertilizer’s Europe have joined forces as founding members of the Cool Farm Alliance whose mission is\, “To enable millions of growers globally to make more informed on-farm decisions that reduce their environmental impact. Focusing on greenhouse gases in the first phase\, the Alliance provides the Cool Farm Tool as a quantified decision support tool that is credible and standardized. The Cool Farm Alliance serves as both a knowledge platform and a tool development forum.” \nJoin the launch of the Cool Farm Tool online by signing up here. \n
