SUMMARY:Tropentag 2016
DESCRIPTION:The Tropentag is a development-oriented and interdisciplinary conference. It addresses issues of resource management\, environment\, agriculture\, forestry\, fisheries\, food\, nutrition and related sciences in the context of rural development\, sustainable resource use and poverty alleviation worldwide. The Tropentag 2016 conference theme is “Solidarity in a competing world – fair use of resources”. The conference venue will be in Vienna\, Austria. All students\, Ph.D. students\, scientists\, extension workers\, decision makers\, politicians and practical farmers\, interested and engaged in agricultural research and rural development in transition and developing countries are invited to participate and to contribute. \nCall for papers\nThis year the call for papers addresses prospective procedures for solidarity and the fair use of increasingly scarce natural and non-renewable resources around the world. Focus is given to the rising demand for food\, fiber\, feed and fuel to cover the needs of a growing world population and to innovative sustainable practices\, e.g. organic farming\, and new economies and policies. Therefore\, we are interested into research and learning processes between the North and the South\, the East and the West\, and between women and men throughout multiple generations to cope with these challenges. Tropentag 2016 offers a discussion platform for technical and economic potentials to feed a world faced with increasing population\, climate hazards\, and loss of soil and biodiversity. Looking beyond (bio-) economic and technical per-spectives\, solutions are asked that seriously consider social and ethical standards. Along this vein\, we en-courage the examination of ‘fair’ within practices that occur in farming and other forms of food procurement\, and management of natural resources. Thus\, we wish to identify new forms of societal contracts between multiple stakeholder levels\, building solidarity among practitioners\, scientists and policy advisors that allow us to cope with current and future challenges. Tropentag 2016 invites you to present and share a wide range of scientific solutions investigated in transdisciplinary settings in the agrofood value web. \nFiat Panis award plenary session\nOn the occasion of this conference a special plenary session will be devoted to the presentation of the”Hans H. Ruthenberg-Graduate-Award” and the ” Josef G. Knoll European Science Award 2016″ by the fiat panis foundation\, Ulm. \nOral and poster presentations\nThe oral presentations of the Tropentag 2016 are organized in four sessions of six parallel thematic groups plus some special side events. Posters will be presented in parallel guided poster sessions on Monday September 19th between 17:15 and 18:15 h\, on Tuesday September 20th between 08:30 and 09:30 h\, between 11:45 and 12:45 h and between 18:00 and 19:00 h\, and on Wednesday September 21th between 08:30 and 09:30 h. \nOrganizers\nThe annual Conference on Tropical and Subtropical Agricultural and Natural Resource Management (TROPENTAG) is jointly organized by the universities of Berlin\, Bonn\, Göttingen\, Hohenheim\, Kassel-Witzenhausen\, Hamburg\, ZALF e.V.\, ETH Zurich (Switzerland)\, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Czech Republic)\, BOKU Vienna (Austria) and the Council for Tropical and Subtropical Research (ATSAF e.V) in co-operation with the GIZ Advisory Service on Agricultural Research for Development (BEAF). \nTropentag 2016 will be organized by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU Vienna)\, Austria. \n

SUMMARY:FNS Forum online consultation - Maximizing the Impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:The FNS Forum online consultation “Maximizing the impact of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition” is part of a wider discussion to help elaborate the Work Programme for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. FAO invites appropriate stakeholders all over the world to engage and be connected in a meaningful way. Start of the consultation is on September 20\, 2016 and it is possible to contribute till October 11\, 2016. \nBackground\nWith the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, the world has committed to eradicate hunger and eliminate all forms of malnutrition by 2030. The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025) proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on April 1\, 2016 calls for accelerated global action to achieve this goal. \nThe UN General Assembly Resolution places the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition in the context of follow-up to the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2). It tasks the co-convenors of ICN2\, FAO and WHO\, to organize the implementation of the Decade through an inclusive and participatory process\, working “with existing institutions and with available resources”. The UNSCN is supporting this effort by initiating an online discussion to collect the ideas of all relevant actors. Specifically\, and taking the ICN2 outcomes as a framework\, the UNSCN wants to know what elements you believe should be taken into consideration in the development of the Work Programme for the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. \nThe consultation\nFAO and WHO would therefore like appropriate stakeholders to share their views on how best to maximise the potential of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. Participants may want to consider the following questions: \n\nWhat are your expectations for the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition and how could it make a significant difference in improving nutrition and food security of the people in your country within the next ten years?\nWhat critical activities need to be included in the Work Programme for the implementation of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition to reach the 2025 global nutrition targets? Which activities would need to be accelerated in your country to reach these targets? How could these activities be funded?\nWhat can be done to accelerate and improve the quality of commitments from the various actors? What role(s) should public and private actors play in monitoring their implementation?\nHow can other relevant forums\, such as the CFS and the UNSCN\, contribute\, and how can other movements (e.g. human rights\, environment) be involved in the Decade?\n\nVisit the FAO website to participate in the consultation. \nAbout the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition\nThe Decade is a global effort driven by Members States of the United Nations and convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP)\, the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)\, and including other UN bodies and other entities such as the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN). \n

SUMMARY:71st UN General Assembly side event "The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition"
DESCRIPTION:The side-event “The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition: Working together to implement the outcomes of the Second International Conference on Nutrition” is organized in the framework of the 71st United Nations General Assembly. This side-event is hosted by Italy\, Russian Federation and the United Kingdom. \nThe purpose of the side-event is to promote the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition\, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly by resolution in April 2016. The Decade acts as a collective effort to set\, track and achieve policy commitments to end all forms of malnutrition. Moreover\, the event aims to draw attention to the ways in which countries are deciding on and implementing actions that are advancing the improvement of nutrition in their countries. Specifically\, it seeks to catalyze clear and evidence-based commitments by Member States as a first step toward the implementation of national policies\, programs and investments under the framework of the second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2). \nThe event will be targeted at Member States missions in New York\, and representatives of the UN system\, business\, civil society\, financial institutions\, regional influencing bodies\, parliamentarians and donors that work in multisectoral manners in support of the Decade of Action on Nutrition and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Panellists will be invited to highlight ways in which multistakeholder collaboration for improved nutrition can be mobilised\, how political attention can be galvanized\, and how collective responsibility can drive accountability for results. \nThe side-event can be followed through live webcast on the UN TV by following this link. \n \n \n \n
