SUMMARY:Launching the 2nd generation NAIP and RAIP drafting process
DESCRIPTION:The ECOWAS Commission in partnership with the African Union and NEPAD are organizig under the patronage of Minister of Agriculture of the Ivory Coast\, a Regional workshop for launching the 2nd generation NAIP and RAIP drafting process in Abidjan from 30 May to 2 June 2016.  \nThe objective of the regional workshop is to discuss and validate the development process NIPA and second generation PRIA\, and engage its implementation. This event\, facilitated by the Rural Hub\, will bring together participants including: representatives of the African Union Commission\, representatives of the other regional economic communities on the continent\, delegates from each member State\, representatives of producer organizations\, civil society and the private sector\, and representatives of regional and international technical organizations. Finally the technical and financial partners meeting within the ECOWAP of the donor group be involved. \nThis Abidjan workshop is a fundamental stage in launching the 2nd generation NAIPs and RAIP drafting process as part of the Zero Hunger by 2025 objective. Given the various processes currently underway (SDGs\, Malabo\, COP 21\, AGIR\, etc.)\, this ECOWAS-led process is intended as a framework that facilitates the integration of all these converging initiatives\, both at national and regional level\, so as to simplify its governance and thereby improve its efficiency.    \n

SUMMARY:Space for Food Security
DESCRIPTION:&#8220;Space for Food Security&#8221; is a side event of the European Space Solutions 2016 conference which will take place in The Hague from May 30 till June 3.  \nUnder the auspices of the 2016 Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU\, the fourth edition of European Space Solutions is coming to The Hague. Taking place at the World Forum Convention Centre from 30 May to June 3\, 2016\, the major 5-day conference will bring together business and the public sector with users and developers of space-based solutions. Registration is free-of-charge but mandatory. \nSpace for Food Security\nOn June 2\, the side event &#8220;Space for Food Security&#8221; will challenge the participants during a journey across the global food security agenda. Presentations will be provided on food security\, the associated stakeholder and their information needs\, a picture of satellite technology and services up to and including business driven approaches (G4AW Facility) and implementations. A special focus will be provided on license to oprate\, role of aggregators\, bridging the last mile and operational and scaling aspects of the services. The event will be closed with a panel discussion and discussion with the audience. \nDuring the event\, participants will learn how: \n\nspace applications can contribute to increasing food security.\nto provide added value to millions (smallholder) farmers using satellite data.\nto set up businesses which are affordable and still profitable.\ncases: rice farming (Mekong)\, insurance services (Africa)\, disease prevention (India)\, irrigation services (Southern Africa).\n\nWho should attend?\nThe target audience of this session include (potential) end-users of smart information solutions\, all organizations within the information chain that are working on developing information services and products\, investors\, ngo&#8217;s\, policy makers and everyone else who is interested in the services for food security. \nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n14:00\nOpening and objectives of the side event\nThe workshop will be opened by the moderator and a key note speaker who will frame the objectives of the workshop. The public will be asked to react on several theorems.\n\n\n14:15\nChallenges in feeding 9 billion people and the need for better data\nThe first speaker will present from a policy perspective the challenge of feeding 9 billion people in 2050\, and the need to for innovative solutions developed and operated by private public partnerships.\nThe sector speaker is from the perspective of innovation: what can be achieved if we combine the various available (geospatial) datasets.\n\n\n14:30\nSustainable services for food security\nFour services for food security will be presented which are being implemented in various regions in the world. Each services will be described from a business vision\, the targeted market (clients) and added value for the customer (&#8220;the business model&#8221;). Attention will be given to critical success factors such as reliability\, scalability\, license to operate and financing (investments\, revenues). Presented challenges and dilemmas will be subject for discussion with the audience. The four services (TBD) are: \n\nAdvisory services for sustainable rice farming in Mekong Delta\nAgricultural insurance services in West Africa\nCrop disease prevention in India\nIrrigation services in South Africa and Mozambique\n\n\n\n\n15:45\nCoffee Break\n\n\n16:15\nScaling up: from research to financial sustainability\nIn this interactive section the public\, presenters and a panel will reflect on the various paths that lead to financial sustainable service provision. The discussion will be fed by the public reaction on theorems\, the expert opinions provided by the panel and lessons learned from G4AW Facility programme.
