SUMMARY:E-conference: Innovation systems for food security and nutrition
DESCRIPTION:The United States and Brazil agreed in June 2015 to “…jointly promote the implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda Sustainable Development Goal on food security\, nutrition\, and sustainable agriculture by working bilaterally and through the United Nations”.  \nIn the framework of this initiative\, the Tropical Agriculture Platform (a G20 initiative facilitated by FAO) organizes a joint conference aimed at bringing together the issues of capacity development\, agricultural innovation\, and food security and nutrition with the objective of developing recommendations for policy-making. \nA paper providing background information and introducing the topics of the conference is available here. \nThe e-conference will discuss the following questions:\n\nWhich policies or instruments would be effective for developing capacities of food security and nutrition-sensitive Agricultural Innovation Systems (FSN-AIS) at the organizational and systems levels?\nOnce the capacities have been developed\, how can they be kept strong despite changes in management and staff turnover? Could you mention cases where capacities were successfully built and kept for at least five years? What were the factors for success?\nThe concept “institution” comprises a number of formal and informal “rules of the game”\, including relationships between organizations\, regulations and behaviours. Which are the most essential institutions that should be strengthened to foster innovation in FSN-Agricultural Innovation Systems and why?\nWhich initiatives for developing capacities for FSN-Agricultural Innovation Systems are being implemented or planned in the country where your activities are devoted to the achievement of SDGs 2 (zero hunger)\, 3 (good health and well-being) and 12 (responsible consumption and production)?\nWhich indicators would be relevant to measure improvement of capacities that support collective learning and adaptation in food security and nutrition-sensitive initiatives?\nTill recently nutrition problems in low and middle income countries were characterised mainly by undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. An additional form of malnutrition is now present in the same communities: obesity. SUMMARY:EESC Extraordinary meeting: From agricultural to food policy
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 21 April\, the EESC’s Various Interests Group will hold an extraordinary meeting at the Dutch Economic and Social Council (Sociaal-Economische Raad/SER) in The Hague. The conference is entitled “From agricultural to food policy – Towards healthy and sustainable production and consumption”. The group wants to continue focusing on the issue of a sustainable food policy and engage in dialogue with national institutional and civil society stakeholders\, with a view to drawing up conclusions that will be submitted to the Presidency of the EU Council and to the other EU institutions. \nThe title and content of the event are largely inspired by the report of the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy entitled “Towards a Food Policy“\, which was supported and promoted by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs at national and European levels. In fact\, the Presidency of the EU Council will be holding an informal meeting of agriculture ministers from 29 to 31 May 2016\, partly for the purpose of commencing discussions on the CAP after 2020\, and has already requested an exploratory opinion from the EESC on “More sustainable food systems”\, which should be ready just a few days before the May meeting. \nThe conference is expected to involve approximately 100 participants (EESC members\, local civil society organisations and media representatives). NABC and TNO invite the participant to share their innovation needs and ideas during a short brainstorm session.  \nTNO will inspire with concrete cases in five parallel sessions: \n\nReduction of post-harvest losses (e.g. topics like cold chain\, packaging\, processing)\nRenewable Energy (e.g. topics like off grid solutions using wind- \, solar- and/or biogas-energy)\nFood & Nutrition (e.g. topics like alternative proteins\, food fortification)\nConstruction & Logistics (e.g. alternative building materials\, green logistics)\n\nThemes\nIn the sessions the following two main issues are addressed: \n\n“Which innovations\, business models and/or partnerships are necessary to create a better fit for your (export-)products and services in the African markets?”\n“Do you have any ideas\, products and/business models that could be a solution to the needs as earlier discussed?”\n\nFollow-up\nThe topics and issues raised during the brainstorm sessions will be compared with matching needs from other participants and existing project proposals. NABC and TNO will identify concrete options for practical and financial follow-up and communicate these to the participants with an interest in taking next steps on their ideas or needs. \n
