SUMMARY:Stakeholder Forum EU-Africa HLPD
DESCRIPTION:The Bureau of the EU-Africa High Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) on Science\, Technology and Innovation is organizing a Stakeholder Forum “Implementation of an Africa‐EU Research and Innovation Partnership on Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture” in Addis Ababa on April 5 and 6\, 2016. \nThe Stakeholder Conference will take place in association with the third meeting of senior officials of the EU-Africa HLPD on April 4-5 and the College-to-College meeting on April 7. It is organized in collaboration with CAAST-Net Plus\, RINEA\, ProIntenseAfrica\, PAEPARD and the ERAfrica Initiative and is hosted by the African Union Commission. \nSince the EU-Africa Summit 2014\, both sides have worked on the development of a roadmap towards an EU-Africa Research and Innovation Partnership on food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture. The roadmap includes a research agenda with mutual priorities\, short- to medium-term actions towards implementation (2014-2017) and reflections on long-term options for implementation (by 2020 and beyond) of the R&I Partnership. The completed roadmap will be presented to the Senior Officials for endorsement. \nThe objectives of the Stakeholder Forum are to:\n\nFoster the engagement of actors across the whole FNSSA value chain\, and essential for innovations: government\, industry\, civil society and research organisations.\nPresent the short- to medium- term investments made towards the implementation of the Africa-EU R&I Partnership on FNSSA.\nExplore concrete long-term options for the implementation of the Africa-EU R&I Partnership on FNSSA.\n\nThe challenge of ensuring a sufficient\, secure\, and sustainable supply of food to address global hunger and widening nutritional imbalances is one that must be addressed jointly by actors from different sectors and different regions of the world. European and African governments have agreed to prioritise this challenge at the EU-Africa Summit 2014 Beyond governmental and research actors\, several decision makers and actors from the private sector\, NGOs\, end-users\, non-governmental and philanthropic organisations have a fundamental role to play in advancing science\, technology\, and innovation for addressing food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture. Organisations participating in this Research and Innovation Partnership have the opportunity to influence the research and innovation agenda on FNSSA and to jointly design and manage its implementation. \nMore information\nThe concept note\, agenda and other relevant information can be found on the Africa-EU Science and Technology Portal. This portal is being fed with documents on a regular basis. \nFootnotes 1. SUMMARY:Third Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development
DESCRIPTION:The Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development was created to promote effective\, targeted investment and build partnership\, capacities and mutual accountabilities at all levels of the agricultural system to meet the needs of resource-poor farmers and their communities. The GCARD process helps refine regional and global agricultural research priorities\, as identified by different stakeholder groups and representatives. \nGCARD1\, in 2010\, resulted in the “GCARD Road Map“\, a six-point plan for transforming agricultural research for development around the world. In 2012\, GCARD2 identified pathways to impact\, which led to 15 new commitments around partnership\, capacity development and foresight in the CGIAR – the international agricultural research system. \nGCARD3\nOver the course of 2015 and 2016\, GCARD3 is providing a range of opportunities for stakeholders to positively influence the direction and activities of international research for development over the next 10 years. \nThere are 20 national consultations being coordinated by CGIAR Centers with national partners. \nOrganized by GFAR and regional partners\, there are 5 regional consultations – Middle East North Africa\, Asia-Pacific\, Central Asia\, Latin America and the Caribbean\, and sub-Saharan Africa. \nThe GCARD3 Global Event is being held 5-8 April 2016 in Johannesburg\, South Africa and is hosted by the South African Agricultural Research Council\, CGIAR and GFAR. Based on the theme of No One Left Behind: Agri-food Innovation and Research for a Sustainable World\, the Program will broadly cover: \n\nScaling up from research to impact\nDemonstrating results\nKeeping our edge\, staying future focused\nThe business of farming\nBetter agricultural futures\n\nSessions at the Global Event will reflect upon the outcomes of the national and regional dialogues with a view to bridging the gaps between the generation of new ideas and their impact in development. \nBy the end of this intensive engagement process\, the agri-food research and innovation community will have a clear understanding of what’s needed for national and regional systems to be effective and accountable\, and how international agricultural research can be an effective partner in national development outcomes. \nFor more information and the detailed program\, visit the GCARD3 website. \nFootnotes 1. SUMMARY:Dutch Seeds Debate
DESCRIPTION:Agriterra is organizing a Seeds Debate in The Hague on April 5\, 2016 entitled “Better vegetable seeds for smallholder farmers”. \nThe demand for food is increasing. Many Dutch agri-food companies invest in agriculture in developing countries. Cooperation with small-scale farmers and their organisations presents opportunities for the companies and for the farmers. Opportunities to improve the delivery reliability and the quality of the agricultural products and\, at the same time\, to accelerate the development of agriculture. \nMore intensive collaboration provides the Dutch agri-food sector\, the Dutch government and knowledge institutions the opportunity to contribute to healthy economic development in developing countries\, resulting in less hunger and poverty. This is an important step in achieving the United Nations’ new sustainable development objectives. \nThe ‘Small farmers\, big deal’ initiative calls on agri-food companies\, the Dutch government and knowledge institutions to give farmers’ organisations and cooperatives in developing countries a larger role in Dutch trade\, assistance and investment policy. \nPlease download the full programme of the Seeds Debate. \nBackground information\n\nWhat role for Dutch seed companies? – Better vegetable seeds for smallholder farmers (PDF)\nThe “Small farmers\, big deal” initiative website\nMeet the campaign team of “Small farmers\, big deal” (PDF)\nThe Access to seeds Index website\n\nFootnotes 1.
