SUMMARY:World Soil Day "Soils a solid ground for life"
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nThe World Soil Day 2015 (WSD2015) will be celebrated on December 4\, 2015 at FAO headquarters in Rome and FAO regional offices. National events will also be organized so make sure to regularly check the map of the WSD2015 events and/or register your event. The theme for this year will be “Soils a solid ground for life”. \nWorld Soil Day\nSoils have been neglected for too long. We fail to connect soil with our food\, water\, climate\, biodiversity and life. We must invert this tendency and take up some preserving and restoring actions. The World Soil Day campaign aims to connect people with soils and raise awareness on their critical importance in our lives. \n\n\n\n\n\nDid you know?\n\n\nSoil is the basis for food\, feed\, fuel and fibre production and for services to ecosystems and human well-being. It is the reservoir for at least a quarter of global biodiversity\, and therefore requires the same attention as above-ground biodiversity. Soils play a key role in the supply of clean water and resilience to floods and droughts. The largest store of terrestrial carbon is in the soil so that its preservation may contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation. The maintenance or enhancement of global soil resources is essential if humanity’s need for food\, water\, and energy security is to be met. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Launch Platform on Measurement and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste
DESCRIPTION:This side event of the FAO Council will launch the FAO and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Technical Platform on Food Loss and Waste and highlight knowledge and concrete steps required to scale-up food loss and waste prevention and reduction.  \nDuring the Turkish G20 Presidency\, FAO provided significant inputs to the G20 work both on agriculture and development. In May 2015\, the G20 Agriculture Ministers invited FAO together with IFPRI to establish a platform\, building on existing systems\, for sharing information and experiences in measuring and reducing food loss and waste. The Ministers strongly supported the Technical Platform on Food Loss and Waste as the major practical outcome of the meeting which was also endorsed by at the G20 Leaders Antalya Communiqué in November 2015. The Platform welcomes world-wide members and will also work on solutions for low-income countries. \nPurpose\nThe side event will provide an appropriate forum for the launch of the Technical Platform on Food Loss and Waste by FAO and IFPRI\, allowing for discussion and concrete engagement in this action. The event will add to the political momentum for greater action coordination aimed at reducing food loss and waste globally. In 2014 FAO has set up the Global Initiative on Food losses and Waste Reduction with its partner organizations. The event will be crucial in raising awareness among member countries for the need to coordinate global efforts in measuring and reducing food loss and waste within the context of the Agenda 2030 and for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3. \nAgenda\nWelcome by the Chairperson\, Presidency of the G20 (China); Ambassador Dun Niu\, China;\nStatement by FAO Director-General\, Mr. José Graziano da Silva;\nStatement by IFPRI Director General\, Mr. Shenggen Fan;\nStatement by Outgoing G20 Presidency (Turkey); Ms. Sinem Mingan\, Counsellor\, Deputy Head of Mission\, Turkey;\nBrief technical presentation of the Platform by the Agro-industry Division\, FAO;\nMr. Divine Njie\, Deputy Director\, Rural Infrastructure and Agro-industries Division; \nReflections on support for the Technical Platform on Food Loss and Waste by: \n\nAmbassador Maria Laura da Rocha\, Permanent Representative of Brazil to FAO\nMs. Graziella Romito\, Director\, Division for International and European Policies\, Ministry of Agricultural\, Food and Forestry Policies\, Italy\nMr. Khaled El-Taweel\, Alternate Permanent Representative of Egypt to FAO\nMr. Abreha Aseffa\, Minister Plenipotentiary\, Deputy Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to Rome-based UN Agencies\nAmbassador François Pythoud\, Permanent Representative\, Permanent Representation of Switzerland to FAO\, IFAD and WFP\nMr. John Norris\, Minister Counsellor for Agriculture\, Permanent Representative of the USA to FAO\n\nResponsible office: Agro-Industries Division (AGS) \nLanguages: Chinese\, English\, French and Spanish \nMedia: #FLWPlatform and fao.org/webcast \n
