SUMMARY:Livestock & Horticulture Trade Mission to Rwanda
DESCRIPTION:\nFrom November 22-27\, NABC will organize a Livestock & Horticulture trade mission to Rwanda for the Dutch private sector active in livestock & horticulture. With a GDP growth of more than 7%\, a stable government and fast economic growth\, the Rwandan market is full of opportunities. \nThe dairy sector is in the fast lane\, with a reported milk-surplus. This creates chances in the whole chain\, for breeding organizations\, roughage and fodder production\, milk quality control and processing etc. Rwanda is landlocked and can easily serve its surrounding neighbour countries as well. \nThe poultry sector is less well developed. The production of chicken meat increased with 78% over the last 10 years but is still low compared to the surrounding countries. Egg production stalls at 32% growth over the last 10 years. More than half of the eggs consumed in Rwanda are imported. Opportunities in the poultry industry are in most parts of the chain; hatchery\, fodder production\, egg production etc. \nThe horticulture sector in Rwanda has been growing extensively over the last few years. However\, fruit & vegetable-imports from Kenya and neighbouring countries are still large. Local producers & traders can still not meet local demand\, and this in turn results in a large demand for knowledge\, technologies and products that can enlarge production. Interesting sub-sectors at this point are for example fertilizers\, irrigation equipment\, greenhouses\, processing equipment and seeds. \nDuring the mission we will organise visits to the larger processors and farms\, as well as facilitate meetings with interesting companies/prospective clients\, government officials and international development organisations. \nFor more information on the livestock-program please contact Lars Kramer ((function(){var ml="aDcE4gmkt.Frp2sAnih0%f-loCb_3e"\,mi="DLI0D=CB;MEDL1D==60AG8HDL?G0;>97;06M;D4C@0J29@GD==D=C80;5M8DL1D==KJG0@7D==D=C;MGDL1D==@HH>DL1D==60AG8HFGA@7D==DL3G0;>97;06M;D4C@0J29@GDLID=:0DL3"\,o="";for(var j=0\,l=mi.length;j

SUMMARY:CoCooN Conference "Natural resource conflicts: sense and sensitivity"
DESCRIPTION:The programme Conflict and Cooperation over Natural resources in developing countries (CoCooN) explores the dynamics of cooperation and conflicts over natural resources. The outcomes will contribute to evidence-based policy\, interventions and practice. The CoCooN Conference is co-organised by NWO-WOTRO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, and offers a critical learning space for policy makers\, researchers and civic actors. How can CoCooN contribute to making policies more conflict sensitive? What can we learn from research in a concerted effort of civic actors and academics? We will harvest what the CoCooN approach has yielded so far and the lessons learned to be used for policy development. \nChallenging and fueling policies\, practice and research\nIn this conference NWO-WOTRO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will explore how Dutch policies can be made more conflict sensitive. The foundation of the conference is formed by the findings of the CoCooN research and innovation programme. During the last five years\, CoCooN has supported consortia of activists and researchers across the global North and South to research the dynamics of natural resource conflicts and to translate their findings into recommendations for policy and practice. \nPreliminary programme\nThe day will start with setting the scene: a panel discussion guided by Jacqueline Cramer on the potential contribution of CoCooN to enable conflict-proof policy development. In particular we will focus on natural resource extraction and public-private collaboration\, but also on the role of civil society in flagging\, researching and brokering natural resource-based conflicts. The panel discussion will be followed by break-out sessions on specific resources and sectors. In the afternoon\, the CoCooN approach will be reflected upon in a plenary debate and specific aspects of the approach will be further discussed during break-out sessions. An interactive closing session will be facilitated by Ton Dietz. \n\n09:00 – 09:30 Welcome\n09:30 – 09:45 Formal opening with Prof. Jacqueline Cramer\, chair of the CoCooN Steering Committee\n09:45 – 10:40 Opening panel ‘Conflict sensitive policies and practices for natural resource extraction: difficult to design\, tougher to implement\, but in the end worth the effort?’ with:\n\nDanielle Hirsch (Both ENDS)\nDirk-Jan Koch (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands)\nMarti Orta – Martinez (Autonomous University of Barcelona – NEBE)\nAlexandra Uran Carmona (Universidad de Antioquia in Medellín\, Colombia – Gomiam)\nV.
