SUMMARY:Livestock & Horticulture Trade Mission to Rwanda
DESCRIPTION:\nFrom November 22-27\, NABC will organize a Livestock & Horticulture trade mission to Rwanda for the Dutch private sector active in livestock & horticulture. With a GDP growth of more than 7%\, a stable government and fast economic growth\, the Rwandan market is full of opportunities. \nThe dairy sector is in the fast lane\, with a reported milk-surplus. This creates chances in the whole chain\, for breeding organizations\, roughage and fodder production\, milk quality control and processing etc. Rwanda is landlocked and can easily serve its surrounding neighbour countries as well. \nThe poultry sector is less well developed. The production of chicken meat increased with 78% over the last 10 years but is still low compared to the surrounding countries. Egg production stalls at 32% growth over the last 10 years. More than half of the eggs consumed in Rwanda are imported. Opportunities in the poultry industry are in most parts of the chain; hatchery\, fodder production\, egg production etc. \nThe horticulture sector in Rwanda has been growing extensively over the last few years. However\, fruit & vegetable-imports from Kenya and neighbouring countries are still large. Local producers & traders can still not meet local demand\, and this in turn results in a large demand for knowledge\, technologies and products that can enlarge production. Interesting sub-sectors at this point are for example fertilizers\, irrigation equipment\, greenhouses\, processing equipment and seeds. \nDuring the mission we will organise visits to the larger processors and farms\, as well as facilitate meetings with interesting companies/prospective clients\, government officials and international development organisations. \nFor more information on the livestock-program please contact Lars Kramer ((function(){var ml="3A_afmo4peEnsbl%ktCghFD0.-2icr"\,mi="?0B3?JGDM94?0F?JJ53K>A6?01>3M?JJ?JGA3MC9A?0F?JJ2=>3;@?JJ?JGM9>?0F?JJ;6689;9M?JJ?JGL>3

SUMMARY:Webinar: the role of rural organizations in social protection
DESCRIPTION:In the context of a FAO study on good practices in harnessing the role of rural organizations in social protection\, FAO invites you to a webinar on November 25\, 2015 to present the main findings of the study. The presentation will be followed by an open discussion which will give you the chance to ask questions and provide your feedback. \nBackground\nExtending social protection and risk management systems effectively to rural populations is often a challenge for government institutions in many developing countries. The High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition has recognized in its 2012 report the importance of involving non-state actors\, including rural organizations\, in the formulation and execution of social protection systems. \nRural organizations contribute to extending social protection to the rural poor in several ways by: \n\nPerforming agreed tasks through participatory mechanisms within national social protection systems;\nDeveloping collective practices of risk management and mutual assistance for their members.\n\nFAO has launched a global study on good practices in harnessing the role of rural organizations in social protection\, to document cases and compile an “Inventory of practices” on the current and potential role of rural organizations in social protection. \n\nWhy a webinar\n\n\nTo share findings on the global study on the role of rural organizations in social protection.\nTo discuss and validate conclusions with the aim of drawing viable recommendations.\n\nThe feedback from the webinar will feed into the analytical section of the inventory. \n\nWho should attend\n\n\nExperts and development practitioners in the fields of social protection\, rural development and rural services\nMembers of rural and civil society organizations interested in advancing their role in providing social protection measures to their members and communities.\n\n\nAgenda of the webinar\n\n\nPresentation of the two roles played by rural organizations using case examples\, and presentation of preliminary conclusions for each dimension.\nPresentation of the general conclusions of the case analysis.\nOpen discussion.\n\nThe underlying concept is further described in this article on Local Solutions to Social Protection: the role of rural organizations. \n\nHow to join\n\nYou can join the event directly through this link http://fao.adobeconnect.com/rural-organisations-social-protection\, on Wednesday 25 November at 15:00. Seats are limited\, so please make sure to enter the webinar room a few minutes earlier. \nAbout FSN Forum\nThe Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition “FSN Forum” is an online venue for multi-stakeholder dialogue where policy decisions on food security and nutrition are collectively inspired\, developed and linked with practice. The FSN Forum is facilitated by the Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA) in FAO. \n
