SUMMARY:International meeting Urban food policies
DESCRIPTION:An international meeting “Urban food policies : markets\, catering\, urban/rural connexions” dedicated to sharing knowledge and practices among local governments of cities and urban regions from sub-Saharan Africa\, North Africa\, the Middle East\, Asia and Latin America\, along with research and development actors. \nThe objective is to contribute through dialogue to a better knowledge and understanding of urban food policies in the world\, their construction\, modes of action and impacts.\nThis meeting will provide an opportunity to show that\, in addition to national policies and international agreements\, cities can also make a vital contribution to food security and sustainable food systems. \nBeyond urban agriculture\, already known and discussed further\, the conference will explore three strategic levers that city and urban region governments can mobilize : markets and logistics (wholesale\, retail\, transportation\, etc. ); catering services (school\, popular restaurants\, street food\, etc.); the new forms of connexions between urban and rural areas (twinning\, urban investment in agriculture\, etc.). \nThis conference is organized by the UNESCO Chair on world food systems and the French research center CIRAD together with the French Agency for Development – AFD\, the FAO – Food for the cities program\, the RUAF Foundation\, the Regions United Organisation (ORU- Fogar)\, the Mercadis and the Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation for the Progress of Humankind (FPH)\, with the support of Agropolis Fondation\, the Daniel and Nina Carasso Fondation\, the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie and the Montpellier Mediterranée Métropole. \n

SUMMARY:Scaling Social Business in East Africa - Symposium 2015
DESCRIPTION:The regional symposium on scaling social business in East Africa gives insight into and potential solutions for the financial and organisational challenges that many entrepreneurs in East Africa are facing today. The focus will be on agriculture\, education\, health and environment. \nA social business differentiates from a ‘regular’ business by aiming for social impact as much as financial profit. Impact investing is growing in popularity while change makers dare to include economic return in their initiatives. But how do promising impact businesses make the step to a mature enterprise that still has social impact? And when does a social enterprise become an interesting incentive for investors? This first regional East Africa symposium gives insight into and potential solutions for the financial and organizational challenges that many entrepreneurs in East Africa are facing today. \nThe event serves as a platform to share best practices as well as common bottlenecks and challenges. A lineup of thought-provoking and interactive sessions including debates\, panel discussions and workshops will create an important forum at which entrepreneurs and investors can arrive at better ways of cooperation and foster greater understanding to achieve common goals and objectives. \nSpecial attention will be given to examining the struggles of social enterprises to attract timely and sufficient funding\, and to the challenges faced by investors to identify suitable investment opportunities for short and long term portfolios. Through interactive dialogue between relevant East African stakeholders\, we aim to generate new ideas to identify and overcome existing hurdles. \nThe event is hosted by ICS\, a Dutch non-profit organisation\, and Ka Tutandike Uganda\, a child-focused community based organisation\, in partnership with Ashoka East Africa\, INSEAD\, Kulika Uganda\, Royal African Society & British Council Uganda. \nPlease visit the SSBE website to register and for more information on the agenda\, speakers\, field visits and venue. \n

SUMMARY:IFPRI at 40 - Looking back\, looking forward
DESCRIPTION:2015 is a momentous year for the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)\, as the institute celebrates their 40th anniversary.
