SUMMARY:WBG Learning journey on food safety
DESCRIPTION:When promoting access to safe and healthy food or agribusiness opportunities\, adequate protection of people and agricultural production systems against pests\, diseases\, microbiological and toxicological contamination is crucial.\nChain-oriented controls such as prevention of risks\, early-warning systems\, identification and traceability\, auditing and certification may help to achieve an appropriate level of protection. \n\n\nGovernments\, producers\, manufacturers and retail should create conditions for an effective set of risk based surveillance\, control and enforcement measures. How can you contribute to the design of such interventions so that consumers can enjoy safe and wholesome food and business can flourish in a transparent\, competitive and sustainable environment? \nA one-week inspiring journey\nThe ‘Food for All’ partnership between the Netherlands and the World Bank Group (WBG) aims to increase knowledge\, support job creation\, and secure long-term sustainability of agriculture in developing countries. \nDuring a one-week journey a group of programme coordinators\, investment officers and technical specialists from WBG\, selected clients of WBG staff\, staff of the Netherlands Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economic Affairs and their key partners\, can share their ideas and experiences with other knowledgeable and experienced practitioners and experts from development agencies\, businesses and developers. \nAs a roving tour through the Netherlands\, the journey combines state-of-the-art insights from science and practice\, discussions with policy makers\, interaction with companies\, stakeholder organizations and authorities involved in managing food safety in the Netherlands\, one of the world’s largest exporters of agricultural and food products. \nThe programme is designed in close cooperation with WBG and the Dutch Ministries and coordinated by the Centre for Development Innovation (CDI)\, Wageningen UR. \nObjectives of the learning journey\nBy the end of the journey\, the participants are able to: \n\nBetter explain emerging food safety challenges and various institutional\, technical\, and other approaches which can and are being used to address these both in developed and emerging countries;\nDesign successful interventions for improved food safety management and governance\, in relation to inclusive value chains for domestic and international markets;\nFurther expand their network of relevant experts and professionals through meeting and working with fellow participants\, visiting public and private sector organizations in the Netherlands.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:International Certification Conference 2015
DESCRIPTION:Agriculture faces a new societal demand for healthy and quality farming practices for the environment. Subsequently\, due to the heightened requirements of consumers on social realities and living conditions in producing areas\, it is important to impart added value to farmers’ products with a view to establishing a model of sustainable agriculture by generating a production chain that is more conscious of people and of the environment. \nIn addition\, in the light of these issues\, there is a need to reposition all export crop sectors to empower them for more competitiveness and profitability. \nCertification of agricultural products is an essential tool to fight poverty and therefore an important remedy to achieve a sustainable development that will solve problems related to the protection of the environment and increase the income and improve the social conditions of producers. \nIn order to sensitize the various actors of the value chain on the importance of these problems in the promotion of our agricultural products on the external markets and in the development of our economies\, the second ICC edition is planned around the following principal topic: “Certification: valuation and competitiveness tool for agricultural sectors”. \nFor more information on the conference\, please visit the ICC website. \n

SUMMARY:Managing the climate–water–forest nexus for sustainable development
DESCRIPTION:The new set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals and associated targets adopted in September 2015 highlight the diversity\, urgency\, ambitions and interdependent nature of the challenges to eradicate hunger and poverty and to promote sustainable socio-economic development\, while safeguarding our finite natural resources and ecosystems. Climate\, water cycles and forests are three essential and closely intertwined elements of our natural capital\, and that if well-cared for\, can provide a stable and secure environment for agriculture\, safe water supply\, energy and healthy living conditions and livelihoods\, amongst others. \nThe interactions and feedback loops between climate\, water and forests are manifold and complex; and some are well understood\, whereas others are much less so. In this annual seminar we will take stock of the latest knowledge and insights on the interactions between climate change\, water cycles and forested landscapes and what this means for research\, management and policy. We will do so particularly from a macro (e.g. global\, regional) and meso (e.g. watershed) perspective. \nReputable experts will address such diverse questions as: how do tropical deforestation and land degradation influence rainfall patterns\, temperature and atmospheric dynamics? What are the myths and realities of the hydrological roles played by forests in watersheds? How important are forests for the recycling of rainfall or as a ‘biotic pump’ bringing moisture from oceans to inland regions? Do the interactions between climate\, water and forests receive the recognition they deserve? Should water become the new carbon? Are we on the right track in translating the latest scientific insights into robust public and private policy agendas\, management practices and capacity building for forested landscapes? \nRegistration\nAttendance is free of charge\, but you have to register through the following web link: https://goo.gl/knv8gA \nProvisional programme\n12.30 – 13.15 hrs. Registration and coffee \n13.15 – 13.30 hrs. Welcome and introduction\nSeminar Chair: René Boot\, Director Tropenbos International \n13.30 – 15.00 hrs. Climate\, water and forests: understanding the bigger picture \n\nHow important are forests and land use in sustaining global rainfall? – Hubert H.G. Savenije\, TU Delft\nHow forests water our planet: recent advances and current controversies – Douglas Sheil\, Norwegian University of Life Sciences\nTropical forests and water: a fresh look at ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ views in the light of new evidence – L.A. (Sampurno) Bruijnzeel\, King’s College London\, UK\n\n15.00 – 15.30 hrs. Break \n15.30 – 17.00 hrs. Are we on the right track with policy making and managing the climate–water–forest nexus?\nPlenary discussion with panel \n\nJudith Marinissen – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands\nJulie van der Bliek – International Water Management Institute – Sri Lanka\nFAO (Water and Forests Action plan); to be confirmed\n\nThree introductory speakers \n17.00 -18.00 hrs. Close and drinks \nOrganization\nThis is the ninth in a series of annual seminars on Sustainable forest management in the tropics. Are we on the right track? This year it is jointly organized by Tropenbos International\, Utrecht University (Prince Bernhard Chair)\, Wageningen University (Forestry groups\, Centre for Development and Innovation)\, the Dutch Association of Tropical Forests (VTB)\, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dutch government. \n
