SUMMARY:FAO e-conference: ‘Utilization of Food Loss and Waste as well as Non-Food Parts as Livestock Feed’
DESCRIPTION:From 1 to 30 October 2015\, the Livestock Production Systems Branch of Animal Production and Health Division\, FAO will host\, as part of the “Save Food” initiative\, an e-conference on “Utilization of Food Loss and Waste as well as Non-Food Parts as Livestock Feed“. \nWhy this e-conference\nApproximately 1.3-1.6 Gtonnes of food is lost or wasted globally every year\, which is estimated to have enormous environmental (ca 3.3 Gtonnes of CO2 eq. greenhouse gas emission/year\, 305 cubic km water/year\, 1.5 billion ha land to grow food that is wasted)\, social (936 billion US$) and economic (1055 billion US$) costs. Also the food loss and waste has an impact on food security\, natural resource availability\, and local and national economies. FAO through the “Save Food” initiative is working with partners to develop\, plan and implement initiatives for efficient use of resources and harmonization of methodologies\, strategies and approaches. Globally many plant resources are being used either as food or as animal feed. This dual purpose use raises questions how to consider a change of utilization of plant resources from food to animal feed within the context of food losses and waste. Similarly if food gets lost or wasted a part of these losses can be converted to animal feed. \nFAO is in the process of developing a framework and an action plan on ‘Food Loss and Waste plus Non-Food Part to Livestock Feed’ with the objective to develop criteria for setting the boundaries between dual purpose use and food loss\, and to enhance animal feed availability without compromising animal health and welfare and animal product safety and quality\, and meeting legislative requirements. \nAims\nThe aim of the e-conference is to seek guidance on: \n\nthe aims\, scope and boundaries of the framework;\nimplementation of the framework\, and\nrole of different stakeholders\, from academia\, feed and food industries\, civil societies\, policy makers\, extension workers to farmers in the implementation.\n\nHow to join\nThe e-conference is open to all persons interested in the topic\, is free (there is no registration fee) and will be moderated. \nTo join the e-mail conference\, send an e-mail to (function(){var ml="2gcsmrht.kaC34nDfe-lEA0viF%o"\,mi="J

SUMMARY:Land Governance & Food Security in Uganda
DESCRIPTION:Access to land is vital for inclusive economic growth\, sustainable development and food security. Globalization increases national and international pressures on land for food production; but also tourism\, urbanization\, nature conservation\, mining\, climate change\, etc. spur the demand for land. Diverging interests and competing claims need to be managed – to prevent conflict\, to protect local rights and livelihoods\, to stimulate inclusive economic development and ensure food security\, from the global to the household level. Land governance is essential in managing these processes of inclusion and exclusion. \nWorkshop\nThis workshop introduces participants to state-of-the-art knowledge and current debates on the linkages between land governance and food security in Uganda. Participants will share own experiences and learn about best practices in land governance\, policies and regulations\, and how to optimize the food security outcomes of activities. Topics are discussed in interactive minicourses\, presentations by local experts\, solution-oriented workshops and field visits. Topics include: international and national land and food policies; the role of local governments\, farmer organizations\, civil society and private sector in land governance and food security; access to land for food production; gender and land; and conflict transformation. \nThis workshop is part of a Netherlands Land Academy (LANDac) and Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP) learning trajectory that also includes pre-workshop assignments and (post-workshop) networking and continued coaching and reflection. \nTarget Group\nPolicy makers\, civil society\, private sector\, researchers\, journalists\, other interested stakeholders \n

SUMMARY:Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security (ADFNS)
DESCRIPTION:The commemoration of the 6th Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security (ADFNS) in October 2015 has given special focus to Women. This follows the announcement at the 24th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit which declared 2015 as the “Year of Women Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063”. \nIt is widely recognized that women play a central role in food and nutrition security. Research evidence estimates that women in Africa contribute to over 60 percent of farm labour. At the household level\, an overwhelming majority of women prepare the food consumed\, in addition to other household chores. . Hence\, women are key to ending hunger and malnutrition as they form the backbone of smallholder agriculture in their various roles as producers\, processors\, and traders\, among others. \nDrawing on the theme and focus of the commemoration\, several sub-themes are proposed to be further explored and given focus in advocacy\, demonstrations\, messaging and panel discussions by experts during the main event. They will also contribute to the thrust of the event’s background papers and documents. \nThe key objectives of 2015 ADFNS\n\nCreate widespread awareness on the importance of investing in value-chains of strategic (and high value nutritive foods) food and agricultural commodities in order to promote food and nutrition security on the\ncontinent as well as the resulting effect on social and economic growth;\nFacilitate a principled dialogue between a diversity of high-level national stakeholders as well as other state and non-state actors (including farmers’ organizations\, private business entities and Africa’s academic and research institutions) in deliberating on an action-plan to end hunger and malnutrition on the continent;\nShare best practices and innovations on women’s empowerment;\nCreate awareness among women farmers of trade opportunities for local and African traditional foods and their importance in facilitating food and nutrition security through increasing dietary diversification;\nPromote production and consumption of high quality food such as fortified foods with micronutrients\, diverse nutrient dense vegetables and fruits and animal source foods\n\nWho should attend the ADFNS?\nThe ADFNS is expected to include a wide range of stakeholders\, such as civil society\, the private sector\, the scientific community\, farmers and development partners. As befitting the focus of the commemoration\, women groups\, women organisations and entrepreneurs will be specially invited to participate. \nUganda will host the 2015 ADFNS continental-level commemoration on the 28th – 30th October\, in Kampala. Member States of the African Union are also expected to prepare and commemorate the ADFNS in synchrony with the continental-level event and the relevant stakeholders are encouraged to support the organisation of the ADFNS at the national level. \nDocuments\nConcept note: Download the PDF \nFlyer: Download the PDF \n
