DESCRIPTION:Expo Milano 2015 is a non-commercial Universal Exposition with some very unique and innovative features. Not only is it an exhibition but also a process\, one of active participation among a large number of players around the theme of Feeding the Planet\, Energy for Life. SUMMARY:FAO e-conference: ‘Utilization of Food Loss and Waste as well as Non-Food Parts as Livestock Feed’
DESCRIPTION:From 1 to 30 October 2015\, the Livestock Production Systems Branch of Animal Production and Health Division\, FAO will host\, as part of the “Save Food” initiative\, an e-conference on &#8220;Utilization of Food Loss and Waste as well as Non-Food Parts as Livestock Feed&#8220;. \nWhy this e-conference\nApproximately 1.3-1.6 Gtonnes of food is lost or wasted globally every year\, which is estimated to have enormous environmental (ca 3.3 Gtonnes of CO2 eq. greenhouse gas emission/year\, 305 cubic km water/year\, 1.5 billion ha land to grow food that is wasted)\, social (936 billion US$) and economic (1055 billion US$) costs. Also the food loss and waste has an impact on food security\, natural resource availability\,  and local and national economies. FAO through the “Save Food” initiative is working with partners to develop\, plan and implement initiatives for efficient use of resources and harmonization of methodologies\, strategies and approaches. Globally many plant resources are being used either as food or as animal feed. This dual purpose use raises questions how to consider a change of utilization of plant resources from food to animal feed within the context of food losses and waste. Similarly if food gets lost or wasted a part of these losses can be converted to animal feed. \nFAO is in the process of developing a framework and an action plan on ‘Food Loss and Waste plus Non-Food Part to Livestock Feed’ with the objective to develop criteria for setting the boundaries between dual purpose use and food loss\, and to enhance animal feed availability without compromising animal health and welfare and animal product safety and quality\, and meeting legislative requirements. \nAims\nThe aim of the e-conference is to seek guidance on: \n\nthe aims\, scope and boundaries of the framework;\nimplementation of the framework\, and\nrole of different stakeholders\, from academia\, feed and food industries\, civil societies\, policy makers\, extension workers to farmers in the implementation.\n\nHow to join\nThe e-conference is open to all persons interested in the topic\, is free (there is no registration fee) and will be moderated. \nTo join the e-mail conference\, send an e-mail to (function(){var ml="ofm.rFAgls0kvteEhai-4c32n%CD"\,mi="IFJAIG:@4>1IFKIGG2AB8=0IF68B9=9>4444

SUMMARY:2nd International Conference on Global Food Security
DESCRIPTION:Achieving global food security whilst reconciling demands on the environment is the greatest challenge faced by mankind. By 2050 at least 9 billion people will need food\, and increasing incomes and urbanization will inevitably lead to dietary change. The food security challenge will increasingly encompass the triple burden of malnutrition – undernutrition\, obesity and micronutrient deficiencies. \nThe urgency of the issues has led to huge scientific strides forwards\, making it difficult to keep up with the rapidly expanding volume of scientific research. The Second International Conference on Global Food Security therefore aims to deliver state-of-the-art analysis\, inspiring visions and innovative methods arising from research in a wide range of disciplines. \nWe aim to better understand behavioral\, biophysical\, economic\, institutional\, political\, social and technological drivers of current and future global food security. The conference will address the food system activities of processing\, distributing and consuming food\, as well as food production from crop\, livestock\, tree\, freshwater and marine sources; the availability\, access\, utilization and stability dimensions of food security; and the synergies and trade-offs between economic\, environmental\, health and social objectives and outcomes. SUMMARY:AFAAS Second Africa Wide Agricultural Extension Week
DESCRIPTION:The AFAAS  Second  Africa  Wide  Agricultural  Extension Week  takes place in  Addis  Ababa  Ethiopia from October 12 till 16 2015 \, at  Hilton  Hotel  Addis Ababa. The theme of the event “is Reinvigorating Extension Services for Market-led Agriculture within the Context of the  Malabo Declaration”. The event is expected to bring together agricultural  extension and advisory services practitioners and other agricultural value chain actors across and outside Africa. \nBackground\nThe African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS) is a continental platform for mutual learning and innovation among agricultural extension and advisory services providers across Africa. From its inception\, AFAAS had aligned itself with Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP)\, specifically CAADP Pillar IV (technology generation\, dissemination\, adoption and training). Through this alignment\, AFAAS has been contributing to African Union’s goal of delivering average growth rate of 6% GDP. The African Union Commission (AUC) recommitted itself to enhancing CAADP momentum based on the Malabo declaration of June 2014\, which emphasises accelerating agricultural growth and transformation for shared prosperity and improved livelihoods. AFAAS reaffirms its partnering with AUC in translating the commitments of the Malabo Declaration into results; this is strongly articulated in the 2015 April MoU between AFAAS and AUC. In particular\, AFAAS will play a pivotal role in enhancing the utilisation and adoption of productivity-enhancing technologies; value-adding processes; and\, loss-reducing practices; largely among smallholder producers. \nAFAAS held its first Africa Wide Agricultural Extension Week in Gaborone Botswana in August 2013\, which brought together over 300 delegates from more than 40 countries within and outside Africa. The delegates underscored the fact that Africa faced key challenges in agricultural productivity\, because farmers did not get optimal value for their efforts and from their land potential. Some of the key factors causing this include\, among others\, the policy environment\, capacities\, delivery systems\, approaches and tools like information and communication technology (ICT) &#8211; hence the theme of this second Extension Week. \nSecond Africa Wide Agricultural Extension Week\nThe Second Africa Wide Agricultural Extension Week will take place from 12-16 October 2015\, Hilton Hotel\, Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia under the theme: “Reinvigorating Extension Services for Market-led Agriculture within the Context of the Malabo Declaration”. The event is expected to bring together agricultural extension and advisory services practitioners and other agricultural value chain actors across and outside Africa. AFAAS will also hold its Fifth General Assembly during this period. \nSub themes\n\nPolicies and institutional arrangements and support systems;\nResourcing agricultural extension (financing and investment);\nCapacity development in agricultural extension for enhancing resilience of livelihoods and production systems to risks; and\nApproaches and ICTs for knowledge management in agricultural extension.\n\nObjectives\nThe main objective of the Extension Week is to reinvigorate agricultural extension services for market- led agriculture for shared prosperity and improved livelihoods in Africa. DESCRIPTION:The Committee for World Food Security (CFS) is the United Nations’ forum for reviewing and following up on policies concerning world food security. It also examines issues which affect the world food situation. It was established as a result of the food crisis of the 1970s\, upon recommendation from the 1974 World Food Conference. \n“Food security exists when all people\, at all times\, have physical\, social and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. It is estimated that more than a billion people\, one in every six human beings\, may be suffering from under-nourishment.” (FAO) \nThe rise in food prices in 2007-08\, followed by the financial and economic crisis in 2009\, has heightened awareness on poverty and hunger issues around the world. Under these pressures\, the CFS was reformed in 2008 to become the most inclusive international and intergovernmental platform for all stakeholders to work together to ensure food security and nutrition for all. The CFS Advisory Group was created to hold permanent seats for civil society\, the research community and the private sector.
