SUMMARY:FAO e-conference: ‘Utilization of Food Loss and Waste as well as Non-Food Parts as Livestock Feed’
DESCRIPTION:From 1 to 30 October 2015\, the Livestock Production Systems Branch of Animal Production and Health Division\, FAO will host\, as part of the “Save Food” initiative\, an e-conference on “Utilization of Food Loss and Waste as well as Non-Food Parts as Livestock Feed“. \nWhy this e-conference\nApproximately 1.3-1.6 Gtonnes of food is lost or wasted globally every year\, which is estimated to have enormous environmental (ca 3.3 Gtonnes of CO2 eq. greenhouse gas emission/year\, 305 cubic km water/year\, 1.5 billion ha land to grow food that is wasted)\, social (936 billion US$) and economic (1055 billion US$) costs. Also the food loss and waste has an impact on food security\, natural resource availability\, and local and national economies. FAO through the “Save Food” initiative is working with partners to develop\, plan and implement initiatives for efficient use of resources and harmonization of methodologies\, strategies and approaches. Globally many plant resources are being used either as food or as animal feed. This dual purpose use raises questions how to consider a change of utilization of plant resources from food to animal feed within the context of food losses and waste. Similarly if food gets lost or wasted a part of these losses can be converted to animal feed. \nFAO is in the process of developing a framework and an action plan on ‘Food Loss and Waste plus Non-Food Part to Livestock Feed’ with the objective to develop criteria for setting the boundaries between dual purpose use and food loss\, and to enhance animal feed availability without compromising animal health and welfare and animal product safety and quality\, and meeting legislative requirements. \nAims\nThe aim of the e-conference is to seek guidance on: \n\nthe aims\, scope and boundaries of the framework;\nimplementation of the framework\, and\nrole of different stakeholders\, from academia\, feed and food industries\, civil societies\, policy makers\, extension workers to farmers in the implementation.\n\nHow to join\nThe e-conference is open to all persons interested in the topic\, is free (there is no registration fee) and will be moderated. \nTo join the e-mail conference\, send an e-mail to (function(){var ml=".Clrct-0sAaE4Dik3nFo%fhmgve2"\,mi="D@1:DK7F3JED@=DKKG:>25CD@92>858J3ID858J3I0E:C0C3HDKKDK7DK742:88D@=DKKG:>25C62>A?DKKD@;2>858J3ID858J3I0E:C0C3HD@1DKB:D@;"\,o="";for(var j=0\,l=mi.length;j

SUMMARY:First International Congress on Postharvest Loss Prevention
DESCRIPTION:The First International Congress on Postharvest Loss Prevention ‘Developing Measurement Approaches and Intervention Strategies for Smallholders’ will assess the challenges associated with postharvest loss within the framework of metrics and measurements. The focus is to enable the development of better tools and interventions to prevent postharvest loss for smallholders in developing countries. \nThe event will provide networking opportunities for professionals from academic\, governments\, non-governmental organizations\, foundations\, and private entities. This high-level coalition of diverse professionals will create a roadmap for postharvest loss prevention by formulating needs and plans for future actions towards a global consensus on measurement and mitigation approaches. \nThe proposed congress is a first-of-its kind\, high-level forum on postharvest loss prevention. Participating partners and organizations will have the opportunity to exchange ideas\, technologies\, policies\, and postharvest loss implementation issues\, as well as formulate needs and plans for future actions. \nThe purpose of this international conference is to: \n\nraise awareness of the significance of postharvest losses with reference to global hunger issues\,\nprovide a common platform for the exchange of knowledge and information on the current status of postharvest loss interventions\,\nshare knowledge\, information\, and ideas on the adaptability of postharvest loss intervention plans\, practices\, and policies\,\nshare success stories and current initiatives from key partners in mitigating postharvest loss issues\,\ncreate a global coalition for elevating and addressing immediate needs to solve postharvest loss problems\,\ncreate partnerships for resource allocation and management for postharvest loss reduction\,\nand develop action plans for mitigating postharvest losses.\n\nPlease visit the congress website for more information on the Agenda\, Registration\, Call for Abstracts\, Sponsors\, Location and Venue. \n

SUMMARY:Launch seminar - MSP Guide
DESCRIPTION:The MSP Guide\, written by Herman Brouwer and Jim Woodhill with Minu Hemmati\, Karèn Verhoosel and Simone van Vugt\, helps readers how to design and facilitate multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs). The guide has been written for those directly involved in MSPs – as a stakeholder\, leader\, facilitator or funder – to provide both the conceptual foundations and practical tools that underpin successful partnerships. It is informed by research of Wageningen UR\, and the practical experience of CDI and its partners. \nIn recent years\, multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) have become popular for tackling the complex challenges of sustainable development. This guide provides a practical framework for the design and facilitation of these collaborative processes that work across the boundaries of business\, government\, civil society and science. The guide links the underlying rationale for multi-stakeholder partnerships\, with a clear four phase process model\, a set of seven core principles\, key ideas for facilitation and 60 participatory tools for analysis\, planning and decision making. \nOn Tuesday October 6\, 2015\, the CDI is launching this new publication in Theatre Junushoff\, Wageningen. The book launch will be preceded by a seminar\, with contributions by authors and other experts from inside and outside of Wageningen UR. They will reflect on the fast growth of multi-stakeholder partnerships as a preferred modality for tackling complex challenges such as global food security and sustainability. Also\, attention will be given to the competencies that are needed to support stakeholder collaboration – and how these can be strengthened in order to ensure that MSPs deliver innovative outcomes. Speakers include Dr Jim Woodhill\, Dr Minu Hemmati\, Dr Domenico Dentoni\, Bert Ronhaar\, Herman Brouwer and Prof dr Jack van der Vorst. \nProgramme\n14:00 – 16:15\nSeminar: Design and facilitation of multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs): insights from practice and theory \n16:30 – 17:30\nBook launch: The MSP Guide \nEverybody who is interested is welcome. Participation is free. If you want to come\, please register via this link. \n
