SUMMARY:29th International Conference of Agricultural Economists
DESCRIPTION:Improved access to information appears to have greatly amended the performance of markets in many rural areas\, especially in markets for perishable products. The emergence of money transfer and payment mechanisms has potentially enormous implications for access to finance and payment mechanisms for a huge population of people currently without access to banks. The theme “Agriculture in an Interconnected World” of the 29th International Conference of Agricultural Economists is intended to capture the widespread adoption of new communication technologies. \nThe theme embraces a wide range of interconnections that are contributing to unprecedented changes in global agriculture\, such as: \n\ntrade policy debates\, both when prices are high and when they are low;\nthe collective action problems associated with price volatility;\ninternational investment in agricultural land;\nlinks between scientific progress and productivity growth in agriculture;\nclimate change and agriculture;\ncompetition between agriculture and other users of increasingly scarce water.\nlinks between agricultural and energy markets through biofuels and inputs of fuel and fertilizer;\nlinks between agriculture and other uses of land;\nlinks between agriculture and other sectors as developing countries urbanize and labor moves out of agriculture;\nthe supermarket revolution in developing countries;\n\nThe 29th ICAE proposes to address these changes\, their effects and the best ways to address the challenges. \nThe conference will be held in the wonderful northern-Italian city of Milan\, place of EXPO 2015\, that by bringing together leading experts in these areas will provide a forum for exchange of ideas and new insights. \n

SUMMARY:The Business of Food Security: profitability\, sustainability and risk
DESCRIPTION:The Crawford Fund’s annual conference on food security\, which holds the key place in the development and food security calendar\, will this year be held during the Parliamentary sitting week of 10-12 August 2015 in Canberra\, Australia. \nThe conference will focus on the importance of collaboration and partnership between the public and private sectors to achieve sustainable intensification and improved food security. The reason for our focus on the private sector this year is that we believe meeting future food demand within the limits of the earth’s natural resources is a pressing challenge with critically important roles for both the public and private sectors. Innovation underpinned by targeted research investment is critical to achieve sustainable intensification of agricultural production. \n“We see that new visions are needed for both the public and private sectors to maintain sustainability while ensuring profitability for those relying on and contributing to food security. We want this year’s conference to help shape these longer term visions.\n \nThe Hon John Kerin AM\nChairman\, The Crawford Fund \nThe conference will connect with business to explore new directions in research and sustainable sourcing already being taken by the private sector and to assess the implications of this for public policy and a new generation of public private partnerships. \nKeynote speakers include: \n\nMr Chris Brett – Senior Vice President\, Head of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability\, Olam International\nMr Anthony Pratt – Chairman and CEO of Pratt Industries and Global Chairman of Visy Industries\nHer Excellency Gerda Verburg – Ambassador\, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN Organizations for Food and Agriculture\, Chair of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and Chair of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Food and Nutrition Security\n\nFor more information\, please visit the website of the Crawford Fund. \n
