SUMMARY:No More Food to Waste Conference
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Netherlands\, together with the FAO\, is proud to announce the international conference ‘NO MORE FOOD TO WASTE – Global action to stop food waste and food losses’. This international conference will be held from 16-19 June 2015 in the World Forum convention center in The Hague\, the Netherlands. \nThe Food & Business Knowledge Platform together with the Postharvest Network\, is organizing a side event during this conference on Thursday June 18\, 2015 at 13:00: Agrofood supply chain efficiency for food & nutrition security. \n\nWide range of relevant stakeholders in the food system\nThe conference aims to bring together a wide range of relevant stakeholders in the food system\, including governments\, international organizations\, private sector\, non-governmental organizations\, philanthropic foundations\, local community producers\, and the scientific community to share experiences and demonstrate combined action in partnerships in the food chain. \nBackground\nFAO estimates that each year approximately one-third of all food produced for human consumption in the world is either lost or wasted. Food losses and food waste are consequences of the way food supply chains function\, technically\, culturally and economically. Food waste and food losses along the food chain vary by region and product. \nThe conference will try to find answers to questions such as: \n\nWhat innovations\, cooperation\, partnerships and coordination are needed to stop food waste and food losses?\nHow do improving infrastructure\, better storage chains\, more efficient distribution systems\, contracts between different actors in the supply chain and responsible consumer behavior contribute to reducing losses and valorizing waste?\nDo we have all the technology needed to reduce losses and valorise waste? If so\, why are these not being used?\nDo we need new technological or social innovations?\nHow do we involve all stakeholders?\nWhich actions will be effective and efficient?\n\nObjective of the conference\nThe main outcome of the conference will be a concrete action plan\, initiated and supported by the involved stakeholders. This conference therefore will include stakeholders from the food industry\, retail\, farmers\, IGO’s\, NGO’s\, civil society\, scientists and national and international policymakers. \n4-day conference\nDuring the 4-day conference\, case studies\, success stories and pilots for partnerships for the reduction of food waste and food losses will be presented. Working sessions will be organized around cases and best practices with potential i.a. by multinationals as well as small and medium sized enterprises. \nThe conference will seek to launch pilots that can be scaled up and will aim to establish concrete commitments to reduce food waste and losses. What is already working\, what is still work in progress? We would welcome your contribution to this event! \nFor more information on the conference schedule and to register\, please visit the website. \n

SUMMARY:Agrofood supply chain efficiency for food & nutrition security
DESCRIPTION:The Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP) together with the Postharvest Network (PhN) is organizing a side event during the No More Food to Waste conference: What we need to know: how to enhance the agrofood supply chain efficiency for food & nutrition security. \nThe session takes place on Thursday June 18\, 2015 from 13:00 till 14:30. \nSession\nRecently within the F&BKP research has been conducted on relations between the reduction of post-harvest losses and food security. The main conclusion of this study is that reducing the wastage issue cannot be solved in a single stroke. Interventions\, although important\, often do not make a significant contribution on their own\, but can do so when embedded in a broader and integrated value chain or food system approach with an eye on context specific circumstances. This valuable insight has practical implications for solutions to reduce losses and improve food security; When food losses occur in a supply chain\, there is not one single problem owner to address. A typical supply chain involves several actors without one actor being responsible for the total supply chain. So how to change the supply chain in order to reduce losses and improve food security? What makes one of the involved actors move? What kind of instruments are needed? \nA discussion with the audience will focus on these questions and on identifying the kind of interventions that might work when improving a food supply chain. Also the need to develop an international Community of Practice on (knowledge for) interventions for value chain improvement will be discussed. \nProgram\n\nIntroduction\n\nFood & Business Knowledge Platform: Lessons on the reduction of wastage and the improvement of food security in developing countries\nPostharvest Network: The PHN approach to improve postharvest supply chains in developing and emerging countries\n\n\nVarious experiences and opportunities in enhancing supply chains in the Netherlands and developing countries\nDiscussion on opportunities in enhancing supply chains in developing and emerging countries\n\nAbout the Food & Business Knowledge Platform\nThe Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP) is an open Platform in which various actors from government\, academia\, businesses and organisations together develop a funded knowledge agenda for food and nutrition security by conducting and disseminating knowledge in this field. The platform is initiated by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.\nwww.knowledge4food.net \nAbout the Postharvest Network\nThe Postharvest Network (PHN) wants to reduce postharvest losses in the agrofood supply chain\, by applying practical solutions and knowledge from Dutch companies\, research institutes and governments. The Postharvest Network is a collaboration of Dutch companies\, research institutes and governments. The Postharvest Network is an initiative of the Dutch Ministries of Economic Affairs and Foreign Affairs.\nwww.postharvestnetwork.com \n \n
