SUMMARY:Sustainable Food Lab Annual Summit 2015
DESCRIPTION:The Sustainable Food Lab Leadership Summit on the ss Rotterdam\, in Rotterdam\, The Netherlands\, the week of June 7\, 2015\, will explore: \n\nCollaborations in sourcing regions to achieve sustainable sourcing objectives;\nBuilding from the gains made by roundtables and certifications towards larger shifts in commodity systems;\nEngaging with farmers to co-design sustainability programs and make faster progress;\nTaking a look at how corporate commitments such as zero-deforestation are achieved and what they mean;\nLooking past codes of conduct to sustainable livelihoods (living wages and living incomes) in source regions.\n\nThese conversations are about solving problems rather than symptoms. Several years ago the focus of sustainability initiatives broadened from operations to supply chain. Now we see that the supply chain lens must broaden further to solve supply chain challenges of water risk\, biodiversity impacts\, and poverty. \nSustainable Food Lab annual summits begin with one- or two-day Learning Journeys in the field. These Journeys are opportunities for small groups to learn more together than is possible individually. The conversations are deep and relationships lasting. \nThe Learning Journeys are followed by working sessions which advance many existing initiatives\, including collaboration in regions with water risk\, the Cool Farm Alliance\, performance measurement in smallholder systems\, the Seas of Change Initiative on scaling up more inclusive markets\, and soil-building rotations in commodity production. We welcome other suggestions. \nFor more information and registration\, please visit the website of Sustainable Food Laboratory.  \n

SUMMARY:Online debate: Why aren't farmers using agricultural tech?
DESCRIPTION:Join the SciDev.Net online debate\, which will take place on on Tuesday June 9\, 2015 starting at 1pm British time\, and which you can attend through the website of SciDev.Net and follow through @scidevnet and #Tech4Ag on Twitter. Over two hours\, the expert panel will help steer a discussion on why farmers in developing countries are not improving productivity by adopting a greater number of innovative technologies. \nDelivering food security for everyone on the planet is a monumental challenge. The global population is set to increase by over two billion by 2050 and\, coupled with increasing incomes\, this will inevitably lead to a rising demand for food. Yet the effects of soil erosion\, climate change and an increasing shortage of water due to over irrigation are likely to lead to a loss of farmland. To attain food security\, farmers will have to become ever more innovative. But many farmers in the developing world are slow to adopt technological innovations\, ranging from improved maize varieties to the use of information technology. Our online discussion will explore the possible reasons for this. \nThe debate is being organised alongside the Cornell Alliance for Science\, a global initiative for science-based agricultural communications. Accompanying the debate is an introductory piece by the alliance’s director\, Sarah Davidson Evanega\, on the importance of engaging with farmers to increase the uptake of agricultural innovation. \nDebate questions\n\nWhat barriers are preventing new technologies from reaching local farmers?\nWhat can be done to improve the spread of information on new technologies?\nCan farmers access training in the use of new technologies? What more can be done to ensure that training reaches farmers in remote areas?\nWhy is there a reluctance to accept new farming methods?\nHow can technology be better designed to meet the needs of smallholder farmers in the global South?  Do innovations tend to be designed instead for the interests of large-scale agribusiness in the North?\nHow can farmers get more involved in the design and adaptation of tech\, drawing on their own experience and expertise?\nIs there a danger that some innovations — for example new seed varieties — will leave farmers dependent on the owners of these new products?\n\nThe debate will draw on the experience and expertise of academics and SciDev.Net staff from around the world. \n
