SUMMARY:Food in the Bio-based Economy; Sustainable Provision and Access
DESCRIPTION:The international conference “Food in the Bio-based Economy; Sustainable Provision and Access” is organized by the Section Economics of Wageningen UR and focuses on the economic analysis of the relevant issues related to the sustainable food provision and access in the emerging bio-based Economy. \nTheme and scope\nAddressing global challenges such as climate change\, population growth and particularly the increase in food demand involves biological sciences. This includes industrial biotechnology and agricultural technologies that increase efficiency and environmental sustainability in food production\, and provide alternative sources for energy supply and biological solutions to improve health outcomes. The emerging bio-economy will be influenced by public policies\, regulations\, consumer attitudes and societal responses in general. Furthermore\, resources are not equally distributed and accessible. Enhancing global food security remains a big challenge. Contrasting problems exist where in one part of the world we observe food waste and obesity\, while poverty and undernourishment in other parts. \nObjectives\nThis conference aims at bringing together frontier economic research on sustainable food production and consumption in the bio-based economy at local\, regional and (inter)national levels. WUR invites theoretical and empirical contributions from different fields of economics that address the specific objectives of the conference. \nSpecific objectives of this conference are to: \n\nContribute to the ongoing debate on global food security in the bio-based economy\nGenerate insight in the development of the bio-based economy\nBring together economists interested in research on sustainable food provision and access at multiple levels\nStrengthen the link between economic theory and empirical work on sustainable food production and consumption\n\nTopics\nWUR invites submissions on the following topics but not limited to: \n\nSustainable intensification and the bio-economy\nMeasurement of the bio-economy\nInnovation and technology transfer\nClimate change impacts\nWater management and soil conservation\nFood and fuel competition\nConsumer attitudes and behavior\nRegulations and policies\nDistribution\, trade and market access\nPolitical economy of food supply\n\nSpecial Issue\nA special issue of the NJAS – Wageningen Journal of Life Sciences on the conference theme will be published under the Guest Editorship of the conference organizing committee. Papers submitted for this special issue will undergo the normal journal reviewing process. No additional publication fees will be charged. Authors whose papers are accepted for presentation at the conference are encouraged to submit their papers to the NJAS special issue. \nFor more information\, to submit papers and to register\, please visit the website. \n

SUMMARY:Expert meeting (at invitation only): Capitalizing of knowledge in international PPPs
DESCRIPTION:Capitalizing of knowledge is a challenge for Dutch private sector and research institutes. In the Netherlands knowledge institutes and private sector are involved in innovative projects where knowledge is brought to business value\, including applying knowledge to solve existing problems and creating new knowledge through research. \nThe Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs has developed a seed money fund to stimulate the scoping and development of new partnerships between the private sector and research institutes. Setting up such Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in an international context is a complex task. There are many stakeholders involved who need to align their interests in order to develop a successful partnership. \nWUR-LEI and WUR-Food & Biobased Research have looked into various international cases in which business value creation with research knowledge resources takes place. The main research question they have explored is: What were critical success factors for the formation and continuation of international PPPs\, in which knowledge generation and capitalization play a role? Related questions are: Is seed money effective for building new partnerships? How has seed funding been used by previous PPPs\, and what can we learn from them? What models are applied to achieve successful consortia and in addition generate spin off to really capitalize on the knowledge of the Dutch agro-food sector? \nExpert meeting\nThe Ministry of Economic Affairs and the F&BKP are organizing an expert meeting (at invitation only) to discuss the lessons learnt with people who have experience in architecting models for knowledge capitalization\, ranging from research project leaders\, to government officials responsible for knowledge creation\, and the private sector. Our goal is to bring together the research results and the experience of the participants in a brochure describing the various pathways to knowledge capitalization. \n
