SUMMARY:Course: 'Market access for sustainable development'
DESCRIPTION:Today\, markets are increasingly seen as a good instrument for poverty reduction and sustainable development. However\, market failures and shortcomings often diminish the desired impact on poverty. This international course shows participants how to use markets as a tool to alleviate poverty. \nPro-poor inclusive value chain development\nOpening markets for smallholders and their products\nThis course takes market trends as a given\, and market dynamics as a possible basis for sustainable development and examines the do’s and don’ts of market-led development. Participants will be challenged to find answers to the following interrelated questions: \n\nhow can smallholders effectively engage in market development?\nhow can they access markets better with their products?\n\nThese questions will be addressed in several modules. The module Market Participation deals with the market economic dynamics\, and how to engage small-scale farmers and rural dwellers. The second module deals with all the issues a product comes across on its way to customers: the institutions that govern value chains. The third module deals with a strategic planning process and tools that can be used to develop appropriate and targeted action plans\, project proposals and/or programmes.\nThe step-by-step development of ‘bankable’ project proposals\, that are based on a selection of participants cases\, and in which all the lessons learned will be practised and internalised\, is an integral part of the curriculum. \nCourse objectives\nUpon completion of the course you will: \n\nbe more competent in the area of market access by differentiating between issues related to market participation\, chain governance and institutional change;\nunderstand conceptual frameworks related to market development which can be used to identify pro-poor and inclusive development opportunities;\nbe able to support policymakers\, development practitioners and professional service providers in their new role as market facilitators;\nbe able to apply tools and instruments to develop market-led\, pro-poor\, inclusive and/or sustainable development interventions.\n\nTarget audience\nThe course is intended for staff of government departments\, non-government and civil society organisations\, business associations\, development agencies\, universities and colleges of higher education\, and for other professionals working in the domain of market-driven development. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:FAO e-mail conference: Tailoring rural advisory services to family farms
DESCRIPTION:The UN General Assembly declared 2014 to be the International Year of Family Farming and invited the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to facilitate implementation of the International Year\, in collaboration with its partners. \nAmong its other initiatives for the International Year\, FAO has worked with the Global Forum on Rural Advisory Services (GFRAS) in setting the spotlight on rural advisory services for family farms. This has been done by jointly organizing two recent side events on the topic – in Buenos Aires on 26 September 2014 during the 5th GFRAS Annual Meeting and in Rome on 27 October 2014 during the Global Dialogue on Family Farming. To continue and expand the dialogue to a global audience\, the FAO Research and Extension Unit is now hosting an e-mail conference on “Tailoring rural advisory services to family farms” which will allow participants to share their knowledge\, ideas and experiences on this topic. The conference takes place 1-18 December 2014. Results of the two side events and the e-mail conference will feed into preparations of a document on policies to enhance rural advisory services for family farms that FAO and GFRAS are planning to publish in 2015. \nThe conference is open to everyone\, is free and will be moderated. SUMMARY:International conference on solutions to reduce food waste and food losses
DESCRIPTION:Conference for the private sector\, governments\, researchers and civil society\, incl. High Level Meeting. \nFAO estimates that each year approximately one-third of all food produced for human consumption in the world is lost or wasted. A substantial part of food waste and food losses can be solved by technological innovation: a better infrastructure\, better storage\, more efficient distribution\, better packaging\, dosage and shelf life. But also social innovations – like a better and more efficient cooperation in the food supply chains and responsible consumer behaviour – play an important role. The Netherlands\, together with the FAO\, will organise an International conference on Solutions to reduce food waste and food losses. This conference will build on the Zero Hunger Challenge of the UN as well as on the recommendations of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). \nObjective of the conference\n The 3-day conference will offer a platform to share experiences and demonstrate how combined action in partnerships for the reduction of food waste and losses can boost food security. The conference has an action-oriented approach. It will seek to launch pilots that can easily be scaled up and will aim to establish concrete commitments to reduce food waste and losses. It will also comprise a high level meeting of ministers and CEOs. The conference is intended as a platform to announce actions\, to present success stories\, and to show easy-to-copy pilots. The main outcome of the conference will be a concrete action plan\, initiated and supported by private and public actors together. This conference will therefore include the private sector (food industry\, farmers and retail)\, civil society\, scientists and national and international policymakers. To this end\, working sessions will be organised by multinationals as well as SME’s around cases and best practices with potential. What is working\, what is still work in progress? We would welcome your contribution to this event! \nFor more information mail to: (function(){var ml="e.324k-AoEhsaCWnrFlicDfLmz%t0"\,mi="J2=
