SUMMARY:Course: 'Market access for sustainable development'
DESCRIPTION:Today\, markets are increasingly seen as a good instrument for poverty reduction and sustainable development. However\, market failures and shortcomings often diminish the desired impact on poverty. This international course shows participants how to use markets as a tool to alleviate poverty. \nPro-poor inclusive value chain development\nOpening markets for smallholders and their products\nThis course takes market trends as a given\, and market dynamics as a possible basis for sustainable development and examines the do’s and don’ts of market-led development. Participants will be challenged to find answers to the following interrelated questions: \n\nhow can smallholders effectively engage in market development?\nhow can they access markets better with their products?\n\nThese questions will be addressed in several modules. The module Market Participation deals with the market economic dynamics\, and how to engage small-scale farmers and rural dwellers. The second module deals with all the issues a product comes across on its way to customers: the institutions that govern value chains. The third module deals with a strategic planning process and tools that can be used to develop appropriate and targeted action plans\, project proposals and/or programmes.\nThe step-by-step development of ‘bankable’ project proposals\, that are based on a selection of participants cases\, and in which all the lessons learned will be practised and internalised\, is an integral part of the curriculum. \nCourse objectives\nUpon completion of the course you will: \n\nbe more competent in the area of market access by differentiating between issues related to market participation\, chain governance and institutional change;\nunderstand conceptual frameworks related to market development which can be used to identify pro-poor and inclusive development opportunities;\nbe able to support policymakers\, development practitioners and professional service providers in their new role as market facilitators;\nbe able to apply tools and instruments to develop market-led\, pro-poor\, inclusive and/or sustainable development interventions.\n\nTarget audience\nThe course is intended for staff of government departments\, non-government and civil society organisations\, business associations\, development agencies\, universities and colleges of higher education\, and for other professionals working in the domain of market-driven development. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Course: 'Agriculture nutrition linkages'
DESCRIPTION:Despite the world-wide increase of food availability\, there are still around one billion people undernourished. This is far above of the target of MDG 1. There is now substantial evidence that malnutrition has life-long negative impacts on productivity and income-generating potential of the population. Agricultural programmes need to become more nutrition sensitive. \nEnsuring nutritional impact of agricultural projects\nMaking agricultural programs nutrition sensitive\nWhy doesn’t a reduction in poverty automatically result in improved nutritional status? Can agricultural development help reduce undernutrition? If so\, how should projects be designed to make them more nutrition sensitive? These are the key issues we will be dealing with in this course.\nThe training approach will be both interactive and practical. Participants will learn from experts but also from each other’s experiences from all over the world. \nCourse objectives\nThe overall aim of the course is to contribute to improving nutrition by making agricultural development programmes more nutrition sensitive. Upon completion of the course you will: \n\nunderstand the concepts of food systems\, food security\, nutrition and poverty and their interconnectedness;\nbe able to apply conceptual frameworks to ensure nutrition sensitive agricultural development programmes and policies;\nformulate or adjust the design and implementation of agricultural development programmes and policies to enhance the impact on nutrition.\n\nTarget audience\nYou are working for a governmental or non-governmental organisation at national or sub-national level in one of the following positions: \n\nyou are a policy or planning officer with responsibility for promoting community and household livelihood including food and nutrition security;\nyou have a managing or co-ordinating position in planning\, management\, implementation and/or monitoring and evaluation of a community food and nutrition security programme or an agricultural development programme with a nutrition component;\nyou work in action-oriented research\, advisory or teaching position directly relevant to food and nutrition security.\n\n

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Women in Agro/Food Chains in Emerging Markets
DESCRIPTION:On November 27\, BoP Innovation Center organizes the second webinar in the series of Women as Inclusive Business Partners: this webinar looks at the Food and Agriculture sector in base of the pyramid markets. Women play an important\, but often undervalued role as dairy or agricultural farmers. They are also involved in processing or service provision in value chains. This webinar looks at two front-running initiatives that benefit from engaging with women in this sector. It also provides a short background to the potential of women in agro-based value chains in BoP markets. \nSpeakers include: Mary Munene – Land O’ Lakes (Kenya) and Mahalet Solomon – TGT Enterprise\, (Ethiopia)\, Nelleke van der Vleuten\, BoP Inc/ICCO Cooperation \nWomen are traditionally under-represented in agricultural training and programs for input supplies and have less access to markets than men. Land O’ Lakes recognized the important role women can play in improving quality and production in the Kenyan dairy sector. Looking across the sector\, they provide women the same opportunities men have; and this strategy has paid off. Mary Munene will speak about how this initiative came about\, the challenges on the way and success they have had with this strategy. \nThe second speaker looks at a different aspect of the sector\, in this case in Ethiopia. The available mechanised farm equipment is often too big for the farm size of low income groups. Besides this\, traditionally women do not operate ploughs. TGT recognised the opportunity and together with Dutch partners is introducing smaller farm equipment\, particularly two wheeled tractors which are well-fit for the work women do. Mahalet Solomon will speak about the plans\, opportunities and challenges of this innovative initiative. \nThis series of webinar is designed to provide practical insights into the ‘what and how’ of engaging women as business partners at the base of the pyramid\, with a focus on the benefit for businesses throughout the value chain. This includes their role as producers\, employees\, distributors and consumers. The initiative is based on the vision that a commercial business case\, social impact and overall improvement for local communities can be combined by actively engaging women in BoP markets. \nTo register and for additional information\, please visit the website of BoP Innovation Center. \nFor general enquiries and contact: Nelleke van der Vleuten (function(){var ml="AgF4o%vlm-s3tdfrb.Eiua0kh2CpnDec"\,mi="5;JE5IFH?N>5;M5II8EC7
