SUMMARY:Course: 'Market access for sustainable development'
DESCRIPTION:Today\, markets are increasingly seen as a good instrument for poverty reduction and sustainable development. However\, market failures and shortcomings often diminish the desired impact on poverty. This international course shows participants how to use markets as a tool to alleviate poverty. \nPro-poor inclusive value chain development\nOpening markets for smallholders and their products\nThis course takes market trends as a given\, and market dynamics as a possible basis for sustainable development and examines the do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts of market-led development. Participants will be challenged to find answers to the following interrelated questions: \n\nhow can smallholders effectively engage in market development?\nhow can they access markets better with their products?\n\nThese questions will be addressed in several modules. The module Market  Participation deals with the market economic dynamics\, and how to engage small-scale farmers and rural dwellers. The second module deals with all the issues a product comes across on its way to customers: the institutions that govern value chains. The third module deals with a strategic planning process and tools that can be used to develop appropriate and targeted action plans\, project proposals  and/or programmes.\nThe step-by-step development of ‘bankable’ project proposals\, that are based on a selection of participants cases\, and in which all the lessons learned will be practised and internalised\, is an integral part of the curriculum. \nCourse objectives\nUpon completion of the course you will: \n\nbe more competent in the area of market access by differentiating between issues related to market participation\, chain governance and institutional change;\nunderstand conceptual frameworks related to market development which can be used to identify pro-poor and inclusive development opportunities;\nbe able to support policymakers\, development practitioners and professional service providers in their new role as market facilitators;\nbe able to apply tools and instruments to develop market-led\, pro-poor\, inclusive and/or sustainable development interventions.\n\nTarget audience\nThe course is intended for staff of government departments\, non-government and civil society organisations\, business associations\, development agencies\, universities and colleges of higher education\, and for other professionals working in the domain of market-driven development. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:AgExchange - Feeding the World in 2050
DESCRIPTION:The Board for International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD) and USAID\, with support from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU)\, are facilitating a 3-day AgExchange November 18-20\, 2014. This facilitated\, online discussion will bring together key stakeholders to share experiences and input on how human and institutional capacity development (HICD) can contribute to a high-performing\, agricultural innovation system to feed the world by 2050. \nThe AgExchange\, hosted on Agrilinks\, welcomes participation from stakeholders around the world\, particularly those that work in: \n\nHigher education institutions (researchers\, faculty\, and students)\nNational agricultural research institutions\nMinistries of agriculture\nFeed the Future implementing partner organizations\nPrivate sector\n\nParticipants will be asked to share best practices and experiences\, constraints\, and solutions for building human and institutional capacity to support agricultural innovation systems. These discussions will be facilitated by subject-matter experts. \nThe AgExchange will also draw and solicit input on recommendations from three recent reports focused on HICD. SUMMARY:Second International Conference on Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:The Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2)\, an inclusive inter-governmental meeting on nutrition jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO)\, in cooperation with the High Level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis (HLTF)\, IFAD\, IFPRI\, UNESCO\, UNICEF\, World Bank\, WFP and the WTO\, will be held at FAO Headquarters\, in Rome\, 19-21 November 2014. It will be a high-level ministerial conference which will propose a flexible policy framework to address today’s major nutrition challenges and identify priorities for enhanced international cooperation on nutrition. \nICN2 will bring together senior national policymakers from agriculture\, health and other relevant ministries and agencies\, with leaders of United Nations agencies and other intergovernmental organizations and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, researchers\, the private sector and consumers.\nThe conference will review progress made towards improving nutrition since 1992\, reflect on nutrition problems that remain\, as well as on the new challenges and opportunities for improving nutrition presented by changes in the global economy\, in food systems\, by advances in science and technology\, and identify policy options for improving nutrition. The key objectives of the ICN2 will be to: \nreview progress made since the 1992 ICN including country-level achievements in scaling up nutrition through direct nutrition interventions and nutrition-enhancing policies and programmes;\nreview relevant policies and institutions on agriculture\, fisheries\, health\, trade\, consumption and social protection to improve nutrition;\nstrengthen institutional policy coherence and coordination to improve nutrition\, and mobilize resources needed to improve nutrition;\nstrengthen international\, including inter-governmental cooperation\, to enhance nutrition everywhere\, especially in developing countries. \nThe scope of the conference will:\n\nbe global in perspective\, but focus particularly on nutrition challenges in developing countries;\naddress all forms of malnutrition\, recognizing the nutrition transition and its consequences;\nseek to improve nutrition throughout the life cycle\, focusing on the poorest and most vulnerable households\, and on women\, infants and young children in deprived\, vulnerable and emergency contexts.\n\nICN2 will build on ongoing global political processes and initiatives to contribute to the post-2015 UN development agenda including identifying priority areas\, nutrition development goals as well as the policies that are required to achieve\, measure and account for them. The outcome of the ICN2 will contribute to the UN Secretary-General’s call for a high degree of policy coherence at global\, regional\, national and sub-national levels and a global partnership for development at all levels. The ICN2 will also enlarge on the Secretary-General’s call to leaders gathered at the Rio+20 Summit to take up the “Zero Hunger Challenge”. \n
