SUMMARY:Course 'Organised farmers as partners in agribusiness'
DESCRIPTION:Small farmers not only constitute the majority of the world’s poor\, they are also the majority of the world’s small and medium enterprises. Through collective action of their organisations\, farmers can improve their performance and income. Facilitators\, equipped with the right approaches and tools\, can do more to support the farmers’ business organisations in their entrepreneurial endeavours. \nOptimising the performance of producers’ organisations\nImproving farmers’ performance and business relations \nThis course perceives farmers as autonomous entrepreneurs\, not as target groups or beneficiaries. In this light\, farmers’ organisations become business supporters. The central question is how farmers\, through collective action of their organizations\, can better access credit\, remunerative markets\, and improve their production and yields. \nMain pillars of the programme are: the economic services that farmers’ organisations can deliver to their members\, stakeholder collaboration\, bringing internal governance up to standards\, lobby and negotiation and innovation of agricultural development cooperation. You will learn about farmer professionalisation and empowerment\, and about collective action of farmers business organisations. The course is highly interactive: participants have the opportunity to learn from the broad international experience of the trainers\, but also from other participants. \nCourse objectives\nUpon completion of the course you will: \n\nbe familiar with state-of-the-art thinking about rural innovation\, farmer entrepreneurship and farmer-inclusive value chain development;\nknow how to review the key challenges farmers face – and identify options for collective action;\nbe able to analyse farmers relations with sourcing companies\, banks and MFI’s\, and other stakeholders\, and know about options to improve the relations;\nbe capable to use operational approaches and practical tools for facilitating the improvement of the performance and market engagement of farmers’ organisations;\nexplore alternative intervention strategies to support farmers and their organisations.\n\nTarget audience\nThis two week course is aimed at professionals interested in the promotion of farmer-included agribusiness. We welcome professionals from farmers’ organisations\, governmental organisations\, private sector\, civil society organisations\, universities\, research and extension. \n

SUMMARY:Course 'Lost harvest and wasted food'
DESCRIPTION:Large contrasts exist in how we manage the food we have available. While in parts of our societies there is a shortage of food\, in the urban and wealthier communities\, good food is thrown away only because it is beyond its sell-by date. Optimising the ‘farm to fork’ chain can contribute significantly to food security. \nManaging the crop supply chain for increased food security\nStrengthening your insights to reduce the food lost \nEstimates indicate that 30 to 40% of the food produced globally is lost post-harvest or wasted because it’s never consumed. Without these losses there is sufficient food available to feed the world population\, even when it will reachs 9 billion people. Complete utilisation of food may remain science fiction\, but there are many possibilities for a drastic reduction of losses. A conducive policy environment\, and actively involved public services and private sector are prerequisites to reduce the amount of ‘missing’ food.\nIn this course\, we will look at ways to minimize losses\, reduce food waste and explore alternative uses. Ultimately\, reduction of losses contributes to food security. During the course we will critically analyse the supply chain\, and design sustainable alternatives with special attention to harvest practices\, storage\, spoilage and food waste management. \nThe training approach is interactive: we will use a mixture of lectures\, discussions\, group work and field trips with the aim to expose you\, as far as possible\, to all aspects of post-harvest and waste management. Meeting course colleagues from other countries\, but with similar interests\, leads to exchange of experiences and mutual learning. Participants’ case studies are the basis of the group work. \nCourse objectives\nUpon completion of the course you will: \n\nunderstand the link between primary production\, post-harvest management\, the supply chain and food security;\nbe familiar with alternative uses of food waste;\nhave insight in the public and private responsibilities in the supply chain for post-harvest handling and food waste management;\nbe able to design solutions for minimising the amount of ‘missing food’\, from smallholders to multinational retailers.\n\nTarget audience\nThe basic prerequisite for participation in the course is an active interest and professional experience in this field. Participants should be proficient in English\, and have at least a BSc Degree or an equivalent academic qualification. \n
