The poultry sector in Eastern Africa has been growing rapidly for the past five years driven by various factors. As a result, poultry production has gradually grown from a mainly backyard keeping system to a more professional and commercial value chain. A study and learning trajectory of NABC and WUR analyse the way in which national poultry value chains in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda are influenced by the dependency on inputs from and market outlets in other countries in the region.   »

Promoting regional trade in pulses in the Horn of Africa

This note by ECDPM in collaboration with FAO discusses the opportunities and challenges to develop regional pulses value chain in the region, drawing from literature review and interviews with key stakeholders. Pulses are crucial in nutritious diets. Despite opportunities, pulses production and yields in Africa and the Horn remain lagging behind potential. Opportunities for value chain finance in Africa’s intra-regional food trade

This brief paper explores the opportunities for African banks in financing intra-African food trade, in particular using value chain financing mechanisms (also called structured financing techniques). Value chain financing is used widely in the continent’s agricultural trade, but mostly for exports to and imports from other parts of the world, not for intra-African trade. And most such value chain financing transactions are managed by international banks, with African banks having at best a supporting role. »
