How Covid-19 and responses to it will unfold in rural Africa is uncertain, but recovery from previous crises has often been quick and strong, even when the measures taken have been quite modest.  »

This report assesses the state of food security and nutrition in the world, and attempts to foresee impact of COVID-19. The critical link between food security and nutrition outcomes are food consumption and diet quality. New analysis determines that the cost of the diet increases incrementally as diet quality increases. The hidden costs for health and environment translate into actual costs for individuals and society. »

This report proposes 11 transformative actions across 4 action areas to meet global targets for agriculture, food systems and climate change. The 4 areas are: 1) Reroute farming and rural livelihoods to new trajectories, 2) De-risk livelihoods, farms and value chains, 3) Reduce emissions from diets and value chains, 4) Realign policies, finance, support to social movements, and innovation. »

This paper highlights lessons and insights about the opportunities, dilemmas and tensions of putting (low-income) citizen agency at the centre of advocacy and interventions. The food systems for low-income citizens have characteristics that make citizen agency an important starting point for external interventions. »

On June 1, 2020, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and the Johns Hopkins Alliance for a Healthier World launched the Food Systems Dashboard. This new online dashboard presents food system data of 230 countries and is designed to better inform policy. »

Stakeholders in seed and other agricultural sectors are facing critical challenges to their normal activities. Without fast and informed action, the COVID-19 crisis risks becoming a global food crisis.
