About CIAT

CIAT’s global research contributes to several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and cuts across four key themes: big data, climate-smart agriculture, ecosystem action, and sustainable food systems. CIAT works in collaboration with hundreds of partners to help developing countries make farming more competitive, profitable, and resilient through smarter, more sustainable natural resource management. They also help policymakers, scientists, and farmers respond to some of the most pressing challenges of our time, including food insecurity and malnutrition, climate-smart agriculture, ecosystem action, big data and sustainable food systems.

CIAT has a total of 968 staff representing 59 nationalities present across three regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. Many are based in the regional offices located in Colombia (headquarters), Kenya, and Vietnam.

Since CIAT’s founding on October 17, 1967, the Center has collaborated closely with its host country, Colombia, based on a shared conviction that agricultural research is an important tool for generating new technologies, methods, and knowledge that better enable farmers, particularly low-income smallholders, to make their production more eco-efficient: that is, competitive, profitable, sustainable, and resilient.
