On Saturday April 14, “Afrikadag 2018” will once again take place in the beautiful Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam. This year’s theme is “New activsim”. Africaday 2018 is organized by FMS in close cooperation with FEPS, with financial support of the European Parliament.

The Africaday is an annual event with over 1200 attendants, 150 speakers from the Netherlands and abroad, and around 100 volunteers whom together with the FMS team make the Afrikadag a great success! Besides a broad cultural program, there are numerous political debates, workshops and speeches in which visitors can get in touch with politicians, professionals and each other.

Since 2012 there is also an afterparty for the Afrikadag, “Africa at Night”, with several artist, performers and DJ’s. This is the perfect place to relax and process all the impressions of the Afrikadag, while having a nice African meal and some great live music.

To highlight certain issues and developments, every year the Afrikadag has its own theme. In 2013 this was “Africa Works”, 2014 was about “Democracy, good governance and human rights’’ and in 2015 focused on the “new players” in Africa. In 2016 it was all about “the relation between Europe and Africa”. This year, the theme is “New Activism”, focusing on: Change we can believe in! The power of activism and citizens initiatives in Africa.

Organizers

FMS

Annually the Afrikadag, the biggest event in the Netherlands on Africa and international cooperation, is organized by the Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS). The foundation strives for the social democratic value of international solidarity within three areas: democracy, development and dialogue. Besides the Africaday, the FMS organizes several public meetings and expert meetings on changes and developments within countries and regions of interest. Hereby they work together with civil society, the PvdA or the diaspora of these countries.

FEPS

The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) is the European progressive political think tank, established as an intellectual crossroad between social democracy and the European project. As a platform for ideas, FEPS works in close collaboration with social democratic organisations, and in particular 50 national foundations and think tanks across Europe, to tackle the challenges that Europe faces today. FEPS is doing a lot of activities, both closed seminars and public debates. The FEPS also publishes a magazine called the Progressive Post.
